Local wild card Alycia Parks will take on Anna Kalinskaya, while fellow American Lauren Davis will face Armenia’s top player, Elina Avanesyan. 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu kicks off her Indian Wells campaign against Japanase rising talent Moyuka Uchijima. Which players will advance to the second round of the BNP Paribas Open?

WTA Indian Wells Day 2 Predictions

Polina Kudermetova vs Claire Liu

Head-to-Head: First meeting

Polina Kudermetova had a dream start to her 2025 season, making an impressive run from the qualifying rounds all the way to the final in Brisbane, falling short against World #1 Aryna Sabalenka after leading by a set. She followed up that performance by qualifying for the main draw of the Australian Open. However, since then, she’s only won one of her last six matches, including a 0-6, 0-6 loss to Daria Kasatkina in Doha. This is, however, a kind first round opponent. Claire Liu is far removed from her top 100 days now, and although she did well to qualify, Kudermetova has to be considered the favorite, though the match should be closely contested.
Prediction: Kudermetova in 3

Lauren Davis vs Elina Avanesyan

Head-to-Head: Davis 0-1 Avanesyan

Lauren Davis earned a spot in the main draw using a protected ranking, but she hasn’t won a main draw WTA match since the 2023 US Open. While her 2025 campaign has seen her win a few matches, nothing particularly noteworthy has come of it. Elina Avanesyan, on the other hand, is a steady top-50 player, and she is in good form, having reached the semifinals in Merida last week. The Armenian defeated Davis 6-3, 6-1 in their only previous meeting last August. While the scoreline may be closer this time, Avanesyan is still the clear favorite to win.
Prediction: Avanesyan in 2

Embed from Getty Images

Alycia Parks vs Anna Kalinskaya

Head-to-Head: Parks 0-2 Kalinskaya

Alycia Parks is enjoying a solid 2025 season, consistently winning WTA matches rather than relying on lower-level success to maintain her ranking. However, the conditions at Indian Wells aren’t particularly suited to her game. Interestingly, this matchup took place in the first round of the 2023 BNP Paribas Open, where Kalinskaya dominated, beating Parks 6-1, 6-1. While Parks is a stronger player now and Kalinskaya has struggled in 2025, with no wins outside her semifinal run in Singapore, the Russian is still likely to outmaneuver the American. However, there is almost no doubt the match will be much closer this time.
Prediction: Kalinskaya in 3

Emma Raducanu vs Moyuka Uchijima

Head-to-Head: Raducanu 1-0 Uchijima

Emma Raducanu has had a tough start to the season, winning just three of her eight matches, and only one of her last six. It has to be said, however, that the level of competition she’s faced is very high. Uchijima has a similar 7-9 record, but the overall level of competition has been lower. She has, however, defeated Ostapenko, and she also nearly defeated teenage sensation Mirra Andreeva at the Australian Open. Despite their respective form, this match should be in Raducanu’s hands. If the Brit performs close to her best, she should be able to advance past the Japanese. However, if she struggles to find her rhythm, an upset is certainly a possibility.
Prediction: Raducanu in 3

Main Photo Credit: Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

Day 2 of the 2025 WTA BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells promises plenty of thrilling matchups.
