His conqueror, Francisco Cerundolo, is keeping home hopes alive and will play a semifinal at the Argentina Open for only the second time in his career. Elsewhere, Joao Fonseca, who saved two match points against Mariano Navone, will meet Serbian qualifier Laslo Djere. Who will reach the title match?

ATP Buenos Aires Semifinal Predictions

Joao Fonseca vs Laslo Djere

Head-to-head: first meeting

Joao Fonseca survived in an epic match against Mariano Navone. The 18-year-old avenged his loss to Navone from Rio last season by saving two match points late in the third set. He prevailed 3-6 6-4 7-5 to become the youngest Brazilian semifinalist in the Open Era. This will be his first semifinal at the ATP level.

Laslo Djere, for his part, overpowered Thiago Seyboth Wild 7-6 6-3. It is now five wins from qualifying for the 29-year-old Serbian. But a sixth win is far from assured, even though clay is Djere’s domain. Fonseca’s relentless aggression and ability to conjure some otherworldly shots under pressure will be challenging to contain.

Prediction: Fonseca in 3

Embed from Getty Images

Francisco Cerundolo vs Pedro Martinez

Head-to-head: Cerundolo 1-1 Martinez

Francisco Cerundolo recorded the biggest win of his career in the quarterfinals when he eliminated top seed Alexander Zverev. Cerundolo fought back from a set down to defeat the German to ensure an Argentinian in the last four in Buenos Aires. He also beat Luciano Darderi and his younger brother Juan Manuel earlier in the tournament.

Pedro Martinez, meanwhile, was not required to lift his racket to reach the semifinal. The Spaniard received a walkover after Lorenzo Musetti withdrew before their match. Martinez’s last victory was also seismic because he brought the curtain down on Diego Schwartzman’s career. In three sets, Martinez won the pair’s only clay-court meeting in Hamburg last summer, but Cerundolo’s willingness to play proactive tennis makes him the favorite. He can also count on strong crowd support to push him over the line.

Prediction: Cerundolo in 3

Main Photo Credit: David Kirouac – USA TODAY Sports

A dramatic quarterfinal day saw tournament favorite Alexander Zverev exit ATP Buenos Aires.
