But who will advance in Qatar and who will make an early exit?

WTA Doha Day 2 Predictions

Yulia Putintseva vs Moyuka Uchijima

Head-to-head: first meeting

Moyuka Uchijima was 2-6 for the year before getting through the qualifying here, but she’s had flashes where she has looked at home at the highest level – including when she almost beat Mirra Andreeva at the Australian Open. Two matches at this venue already should grant her some pretty nice momentum for this opening round. But the problem is Yulia Putintseva doesn’t lose matches like this recently. The Kazakh is so gritty and basically hasn’t lost to anybody who’s not one of the leading lights on the WTA tourn at least half a year.

Prediction: Putintseva in 2
Embed from Getty Images

Aoi Ito vs Jelena Ostapenko

Head-to-head: first meeting

At least in singles, this has been a pretty dreadful start to the season for Jelena Ostapenko. But she was also quite unlucky with her draws, going out to Belinda Bencic and Ons Jabeur in the first round in Melbourne and Abu Dhabi. This looks like a better match-up for the Latvian and maybe she can get some form going. Aoi Ito’s playstyle is quite tricky though, she can mix up pace nicely and loves drawing out errors from her opponents. If Ostapenko isn’t careful enough, this can go sideways. Still, the hard-hitting Ostapenko should ultimately have enough even if she is made to work for her win.

Prediction: Ostapenko in 3
Embed from Getty Images

Iga Swiatek vs Maria Sakkari

Head-to-head: Swiatek 3-3 Sakkari

Maria Sakkari has been slowly recovering her form recently, but things aren’t going amazing. Her opening-round win over Elena-Gabriela Ruse was far from pleasant as well with the Romanian eventually being forced to retire in the deciding set. Iga Swiatek might be just 3-3 in this rivalry, but she’s dominated it after the 2021 season. Swiatek also loves the conditions in Doha and has won the title three years in a row, dropping only one set in the process. It is just so tough to beat her on a slower, bouncier hard-court and so, on paper, it seems like Sakkari stands almost no chance.

Prediction: Swiatek in 2

Main photo credit: Mike Frey-Imagn Images

Expect plenty of entertaining tennis on day two at WTA Doha with 13 matches spread around the grounds at the Qatar Open.
