Richard Gasquet’s lengthy career will end<\/a> in a few months on home soil at the 2025 French Open. The 38-year-old’s longevity and consistency are among the most impressive tennis has ever seen. That was shown perfectly on Tuesday evening in the opening round of the Open Occitanie in Montpellier, where he has won four titles, when he equaled a record set by the legendary Roger Federer.<\/p>\n

Gasquet faced fellow French veteran Adrian Mannarino on Tuesday. Mannarino, whose form in the last 12 months has been the worst of his career, struggled throughout. However, that should take nothing away from Gasquet’s performance. Some in the stands watching might question why he is retiring after an excellent performance that included some trademark one-handed backhand winners. The two-time Wimbledon<\/a> semifinalist won 93% of points on his first serve and did not face a break point in a dominant 6-3, 6-2 triumph.<\/p>\n

That triumph means Gasquet has won at least one ATP match for 24 consecutive seasons. He is the second man to achieve that after Roger Federer, who did it from 1998 until 2021. His first professional victory was at the 2022 Monte Carlo Masters, where he defeated Franco Squillari as a 15-year-old. Many French media outlets placed unreasonable expectations on Gasquet after that moment, meaning his career would never please some.<\/p>\n

In reality, Gasquet’s career is superb and one to be incredibly proud of. He has amassed over 600 professional match wins, claimed 16 ATP titles, reached three Grand Slam semifinals, and made three Masters 1000 finals. The Frenchman achieved that in arguably the most challenging era in tennis history, with Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray at the top of the sport.<\/p>\n
