Three first-round matches are set to conclude the opening round, whilst the second round also gets underway. But who will reach the second round at the Open Occitanie?

ATP Montpellier Day 3 Predictions

Nikoloz Basilashvili vs Mikhail Kukushkin

Head-to-head: Basilashvili 1-1 Kukushkin

Despite all his physical struggles in the last two years, Nikoloz Basilashvili has won 17 of his last 27 indoor matches since the start of last season. Two of those victories came in qualifying in Montpellier. Mikhail Kukushkin will enter this match with the intent of returning to the world’s top 100. But he’s had a slow start to 2025 with one win from his last four matches. Basilashvili is streaky and will likely fancy himself to get a result here.

Prediction: Basilashvili in 2
Embed from Getty Images

Quentin Halys vs Jesper de Jong

Head-to-head: Halys 1-0 de Jong

2025 has not been kind for Quentin Halys who retired hurt in his first tournament in Adelaide. He then had the misfortune of drawing a seeded opponent in the second round of the Australian Open (lost to Arthur Fils). But his performance in a four-set defeat in Melbourne was very encouraging and can look forward to home-court advantage in Montpellier. Jesper de Jong is still chasing his first win of the new season. He’s lost each of his three matches this year against lower-ranked opponents. The Dutchman lacks the tools to hurt Halys on a fast court and it would be a massive shock if he did.

Prediction: Halys in 2
Embed from Getty Images

Aleksandar Kovacevic vs David Goffin

Head-to-head: Goffin 1-0 Kovacevic

David Goffin’s form is seriously concerning. He is about to set an unwanted personal record if he fails to beat Kovacevic. With three straight defeats, this is officially his worst start to a new season. He hasn’t failed to win a match in January before in his career (including at Challenger level). But is doubtful he’ll turn it around anytime soon. Aleksandar Kovacevic will surely brimming with confidence after a title win at the Oeiras Challenger and this is his match to lose.

Prediction: Kovacevic in 2

Main photo credit: Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

It will be a busy Wednesday at the ATP Montpellier event with seven matches on the schedule in southern France.
