{"id":78680,"date":"2025-01-22T09:58:04","date_gmt":"2025-01-22T14:58:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/tennis\/?p=78680"},"modified":"2025-01-22T09:58:04","modified_gmt":"2025-01-22T14:58:04","slug":"ben-shelton-blasts-broadcasters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/tennis\/2025\/01\/22\/ben-shelton-blasts-broadcasters\/","title":{"rendered":"Ben Shelton Blasts Broadcasters after \u201cDisrespectful\u201d Comments towards Djokovic and others"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ben Shelton has hit back at various Australian Open broadcasters for continued \u201cdisrespect\u201d towards several players.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of his post-match press conference following a victory against Lorenzo Sonego that saw him advance to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/tennis\/category\/australian-open\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Australian Open<\/a> semifinal, Shelton took a moment to address the \u201cnegativity\u201d towards players from certain broadcasters.<\/p>\n<p>The American referenced <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/tennis\/2025\/01\/20\/tony-jones-apologizes-novak-djokovic\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">the incident between Novak Djokovic and Channel 9<\/a> that occurred last week where reporter Tony Jones, who has since apologised for his comments, mocked the 24-time Grand Slam champion in front of Serbian fans at the Australian Open, calling him names such as &#8216;overrated\u2019, and \u201ca has-been\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Djokovic avoided his on-court post match interview with Jim Courier after defeating Jiri Lehecka, stating later in a video message on social media that he did so because of the comments made by Jones.<\/p>\n<p>Ben Shelton <a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BenRothenberg\/status\/1882017558615974124\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a>, \u201cI don&#8217;t think the guy who mocked Novak was just a single event&#8211;I\u2019ve noticed it with different people, not just myself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI noticed it with Learner Tien in one of his matches when he beat Medvedev. I think his post match interview was embarrassing and disrespectful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Tien interview mentioned drew negative attention from fans online, with one <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MhWXIVwpLgM\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">YouTube comment stating<\/a> \u201cyou can\u2019t even call this an interview, he didn\u2019t even ask questions\u201d and another saying the interaction between the interviewer and the 19-year-old was \u201ca bit of a disservice to the quality of tennis just played.\u201d Numerous comments on the official Australian Open YouTube video <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rzPh7MU8VvQ\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">called for the interviewer to be fired<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Shelton, who became the second active American man to reach multiple Grand Slam semifinals, said he feels he has been on the receiving end of similar negativity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s been comments that have been made to me in post-match interviews by a couple different guys,\u201d said the 22-year-old.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether it\u2019s, \u2018Hey Monfils is old enough to be your dad, maybe he is your dad.\u2019 Or today on the court it was, \u2018Hey Ben how does it feel that no matter who you play in your next match no one is going to be cheering for you?\u2019 It may be true but I don\u2019t think it&#8217;s respectful from a guy I\u2019ve never met before.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like broadcasters should be helping us grow our sport and help these athletes who just won matches on the biggest stage enjoy one of their biggest moments&#8211;I feel like there&#8217;s just been a lot of negativity and I feel like that needs to change.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Interesting end to Ben Shelton\u2019s press conference. <\/p>\n<p>Unprompted, he took a moment to tear into the quality of local broadcasting and specifically on-court interviewing at <a  href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/AusOpen?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#AusOpen<\/a>. <a  href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ig76VrKq2C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/ig76VrKq2C<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Ben Rothenberg (@BenRothenberg) <a  href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BenRothenberg\/status\/1882017558615974124?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">January 22, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The American\u2019s semifinal opponent is World No.1 Jannik Sinner, who defeated Alex de Minaur in straight sets on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p><em>Main Photo Credit: Danielle Parhizkaran-USA TODAY Sports<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ben Shelton has hit back at various Australian Open broadcasters for continued \u201cdisrespect\u201d towards several players.
