We split the day’s 16 matches between four articles–the other three feature Jannik Sinner vs Tristan Schoolkate, Taylor Fritz vs Cristian Garin, and Holger Rune vs Matteo Berrettini. Predicting this match are Damian Kust, Tope Oke, and Ateet Shrivastava. Who will reach Round 3?

Australian Open Day 5 Predictions

Daniil Medvedev vs Learner Tien

Damian:
This will be quite the chess match between two players who like attacking off the back foot. Medvedev losing two sets to Samrej was quite the shocker, but it seems like the Thai showed some completely new-found quality there. Rallies here will get crazy, but ultimately the Russian should find a way to survive, one way or another.
Prediction: Medvedev in 4

Tope:
Last year’s runner-up, Daniil Medvedev, will still be reeling from the mighty scare he received from Kasidit Samrej in the opening round and will not be taking any chances against an even trickier opponent in Learner Tien.

Kudo to the young American for showing remarkable grit in the Melbourne heat to overcome Camilo Ugo Carabelli in five gruelling sets, but this is Medvedev’s turf, regardless of how long the match goes. If he raises his game like the latter stages of the opener, this encounter should be over quickly.
Prediction: Medvedev in 3

Ateet:
Daniil Medvedev was pushed much more than he would have expected from his first-round opponent. The world No.5 didn’t have much clue in the first three sets but kept his composure and played a great fourth set. Overall, it wasn’t a good match from Medvedev and he will need to improve to avoid another scare against Learner Tien.
Prediction: Medvedev in 4

Embed from Getty Images

Karen Khachanov vs Gabriel Diallo

Damian:
Khachanov could perform a bit unexpectedly well at this event, especially considering he won’t have to face Tsitsipas next round (whom he has a horrible record against). He already beat Diallo in the Almaty final last year and should feel pretty confident against the dangerous Canadian big-server.
Prediction: Khachanov in 4

Tope:
This promises to be high-octane as two big servers clash for a place in the third round in Melbourne. Gabriel Diallo hit a massive 21 aces against Luca Nardi to stage a solid comeback to stay on in Melbourne on his debut. However, Khachanov is a different proposition, and while the young Canadian’s booming serves can keep this close, the experienced Russian will take most of the rallies to prevail eventually.
Prediction: Khachanov in 4

Ateet:
Khachanov is slowly but surely getting closer to his best level and a straight-sets win over Adrian Mannarino confirms that. Khachanov is quite familiar with Diallo’s game as he defeated the Canadian player twice last year. Diallo has a good serve and that might win him a set but Khachanov’s better all-round game should win him the match.
Prediction: Khachanov in 4

Embed from Getty Images

Ben Shelton vs Pablo Carreno Busta

Damian:
Shelton could use a bit more consistency this season and maybe he can find one of these very deep Slam runs again like in Australia in 2023. Carreno Busta is playing a rather limited version of his peak game, but it was enough to fend off Majchrzak in three sets. The American might have enough advantage to win with his extra firepower.
Prediction: Shelton 4

Tope:
If Ben Shelton is in shape, he is one of the most challenging players to beat, and it looks like he is in good shape if his solid win over Brandon Nakashima in round one is anything to go by. He worked hard around the court to earn three sufficient breaks that earned him a clinical, and on the back of that performance, his Spanish opponent stands no chance.
Prediction: Shelton 3

Ateet:
Ben Shelton did extremely well to get out of a very difficult first-round match without losing a set. He was clutch when it mattered the most and looks good to play another challenging match against Pablo Carreno Busta, who got a much-needed win after losing some close matches recently. The Spaniard will bring his consistent tennis from the baseline but Shelton has the firepower and serve to make a difference.
Prediction: Shelton in 5

Embed from Getty Images

Gael Monfils vs Daniel Altmaier

Damian:
It was an impressive win for the Auckland champion in the opening round and he probably should have done it in three sets. All’s well that ends well and while the match against Mpetshi Perricard ended up being really long, it’s possible that it wasn’t quite physical enough for Monfils to start feeling it against Altmaier. Not quite yet.
Prediction: Monfils in 4

Tope:
There’ll be no one in the sport picking against Gael Monfils going further in Melbourne after a meteoric start to the season in which he won the title in Auckland before standing firm against a fightback from his younger big-serving compatriot Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in their epic opener here in Australia. It was a match that amplified the veteran in full flow, matching his difficult opponent for aces and winners to prevail in a five-set thriller eventually. Monfils has switched gears, and it’ll be difficult for anyone to stop him in this mood – definitely not Daniel Altmaier.
Prediction: Monfils in 3

Ateet:
Gael Monfils made it difficult for himself in the first round, as he had a chance to beat Mpetshi Perricard in straight sets but double-faulted on match point. However, he won in five sets, which would have taken a toll on his body given how much tennis he had lately played. The good news for him is he has a winnable match against Daniel Altmaier, who was also involved in a five-setter and is not that good on hard courts.
Prediction: Monfils in 4

Main Photo Credit: Jerry Lai-USA TODAY Sports

We’ll see the end of the second round on Day 5 of the Australian Open, which means 16 exciting men’s matches on the schedule.
