An exciting battle between Kei Nishikori and No. 12 seed Tommy Paul paces the group. Predicting these matches are Damian Kust, Ateet Shrivastava and Yesh Ginsburg. Who do you think will advance?

Australian Open Day 4 Men’s Predictions

Jack Draper vs Thanasi Kokkinakis

Damian
Draper’s first-round performance was a complete mess, but the Brit survived despite 88 unforced errors. It seems like he’s fine physically, it was just really easy for Navone to keep the rally at neutral and wait for the Brit to miss. Kokkinakis is the one who seems more vulnerable fitness-wise right now, but his level is so good I’m tempted to make the upset call.
Prediction: Kokkinakis in 5

Ateet
Draper was not at his best, undercooked coming into the match on the back of the hip injury he suffered in the offseason. Lots of errors from his forehand in particular. But he should be happy to come through the match. Thanasi Kokkinakis will be an even tougher challenge for Draper and he will have to play a much more solid match to advance to the third round. These two have always played close matches and I anticipate this time will be no different. With Kokkinakis’ injury concerns, I have Draper going through.
Prediction: Draper in 5

Yesh
Jack Draper is the future, but his health isn’t ever clear. The same is true of Kokkinakis. In any other country, I’d take the Brit. At home? Should be fun for the Aussie.
Prediction: Kokkinakis in 4

Alexander Zverev vs Pedro Martinez

Damian
It’s a great draw for Zverev as Martinez is a solid hard-courter, but not one you’re going to get massive upsets from on courts like this. He’s made the third round in Australia before and it’s not like he’ll be demolished by the German. It’s just tough to see how this matchup won’t be a rather slow and painful death.
Prediction: Zverev in 3

Ateet
Zverev wasn’t at his usual best from the baseline in his first-round match but served brilliantly to win the match comfortably. He will look to improve his break point conversion as he was awful in that department. Pedro Martinez is in good form and was dominating the match against Darderi before the Italian retired. I expect him to push Zverev in at least a set but the German should prevail in the end.
Prediction: Zverev in 4

Yesh
Martinez got through easily in Round 1 thanks to a retirement, but Zverev is just too strong right now. No one is stopping the German anytime soon.
Prediction: Zverev in 3

Embed from Getty Images

Felix Auger-Aliassime vs Alejandro Davidovich Fokina

Damian
Auger-Aliassime owns a crushing lead in the head-to-head, but it’s been almost two years since they last played. It seems like the Canadian isn’t slowing down after his Adelaide title and should have enough in the tank here. That’s probably going to grant him the win. He’s got the confidence now and Davidovich Fokina has been average for months.
Prediction: Auger-Aliassime in 4

Ateet
These two have met five times before in all competitions and Auger-Aliassime has won every single time. There have been many close sets but the Spaniard is still searching for a win. The Canadian is in great form and I can’t go against him when he is playing like this.
Prediction: Auger-Aliassime in 4

Yesh
Auger-Aliassime has never quite lived up to his potential. Which is sad, because his potential is enormous. He’s playing pretty well now, which means this should be a great match against a solid opponent.
Prediction: Auger-Aliassime in 4

Tommy Paul vs Kei Nishikori

Damian
Both players survived draining matches to get to this point and Nishikori had the extra day of rest. He’ll need it as at this stage of his career managing energy seems to be the key for Kei (pun very much intended). But Paul is fit as a fiddle and in a good shotmaking contest that could go over three hours, you still gotta favor the American.
Prediction: Paul in 4

Ateet
Tommy Paul should have won the match in four sets, but he committed some uncharacteristic errors, forcing a fifth set. His left shoulder appeared hurt, and he had trouble hitting his backhand. Nishikori, who made an amazing comeback in the first round will like his chances if Paul is hurt. The Japanese superstar has a great backhand and I can’t see Paul sustaining in rallies if he isn’t 100%.
Prediction: Nishikori in 4

Yesh
Both of these men came through five-setters in Round 1, and I have some serious concerns about Paul’s fitness moving forward now. I have no such concerns about Nishikori.
Prediction: Nishikori in 4

Main Photo Credit: Jayne Kamin-Oncea – USA TODAY Sports

The second round of the Australian Open kicks off on Day 4 with 16 men’s singles matches.
