But who will advance?

Australian Open Day 2 Predictions

Iga Swiatek vs Katerina Siniakova

Ilemona: Iga Swiatek’s recent form includes strong performances at the United Cup, despite a loss to Coco Gauff in the finals. Siniakova has a modest singles record at the Australian Open, with only three match wins from 11 previous visits. This will be their first meeting, and Swiatek is expected to advance, given her superior ranking and consistent Grand Slam performances.

Prediction: Swiatek in 2

Andreas: Swiatek will have a lot to prove in this tournament, as she’s visibly struggled to play her best in Grand Slams outside of the French Open. The fast courts often trouble the Pole, but Swiatek should be able to take out Siniakova here as long as she can serve accurately and avoid long rallies.

Prediction: Swiatek in 2
Embed from Getty Images

Leolia Jeanjean vs Jodie Burrage

Ilemona: Jodie Burrage’s recent ITF success, including a W100 Dubai title, gives her momentum as she faces Leolia Jeanjean, who qualified for the Australian Open main draw for the third straight year. Jeanjean’s limited tour-level wins and lack of hard-court success make her the underdog. Burrage’s edge in their only prior meeting could help her advance.

Prediction: Burrage in 3

Andreas: A big opportunity awaits for either of these players. Jeanjean will be looking for a first-ever Australian Open win, while Burrage will hope to solidify her comeback run after a long injury layoff. Burrage has a lot of power on her groundstrokes that I think can translate well to these quicker courts. This match should come down to mental toughness.

Prediction: Burrage in 3

Marketa Vondrousova vs Jana Fett

Ilemona: Marketa Vondrousova, a formal Wimbledon champion, has seen some poor results since the French Open and looks to bounce back here against Jana Fett, a qualifier who has struggled for consistency at tour level but showed resilience to make the main draw. Vondrousova’s experience and shot variety should give her the upper hand in this matchup.

Prediction: Vondrousova in 2

Andreas: Vondrousova is back in a Grand Slam for the first time since a brutal first-round loss at last year’s Wimbledon event, as the defending champion. She notably had to retire mid-match in Adelaide last week. Fett didn’t drop a set through Australian Open qualifying and has started to rise the ranks again after injuries and poor form. I wouldn’t rule out a big upset here because of Fett’s confidence, but the Czech will probably have enough consistency to win.

Prediction: Vondrousova in 3
Embed from Getty Images

Magdalena Frech vs Polina Kudermetova

Ilemona: Polina Kudermetova’s red-hot form, including a Brisbane final run and a perfect qualifying campaign, makes her a serious threat despite her lack of Grand Slam success. Magdalena Frech, on a five-match losing streak, will need to rediscover the form that made her a WTA champion last year. Kudermetova’s momentum could give her the edge in this matchup.

Prediction: Kudermetova in 3

Andreas: Frech is a seed for the first time at a Grand Slam, but this is a tough opener. Kudermetova is playing well after a Brisbane final appearance, and I think the pressure as the heavy-ranking favourite might get to Frech. Going for the minor upset.

Prediction: Kudermetova in 2

Main photo credit: Mike Frey-USA TODAY Sports

Day two at the Australian Open promises plenty of excitement with 28 matches on the slate in Melbourne.
