But who will secure their spot in the second round?

Australian Open Day 2 Predictions

Diana Shnaider vs Elisabetta Cocciaretto

Ilemona: Diana Shnaider’s recent form has been inconsistent, but her top-15 ranking and strong 2024 season make her a threat against Elisabetta Cocciaretto. Cocciaretto’s struggles since Wimbledon and recent first-round exits could leave her vulnerable.

Prediction: Shnaider in 3

Jordan: Cocciaretto is a good shot-maker who has probably slightly underachieved during her career so far. However, the young and quickly improving Shnaider’s game is more formidable. She will likely power her way into the second round.

Prediction: Shnaider in 2

Andreas: Shnaider hasn’t looked convincing in 2025 as of yet, but did recently battle in a three-hour loss in the Adelaide quarterfinals. Cocciaretto has taken out big names in Grand Slam first rounds, such as Petra Kvitova and Beatriz Haddad Maia in consecutive French Open’s. However, since a big run to the French Open second week, Cocciaretto has largely struggled with form.

Prediction: Shnaider in 2
Embed from Getty Images

Greet Minnen vs Destanee Aiava

Ilemona: Greet Minnen holds the advantage over Destanee Aiava, having won their previous match in 2024. Aiava, though, comes into the Australian Open with a strong determination after fighting her way through qualifying get to the main draw. Minnen’s higher ranking suggests she’s the favorite, but Aiava’s home support could make this a competitive match.

Prediction: Minnen in 3

Jordan: Minnen has declined in recent times and this is not as good a draw as it might initially seem. Aiava was very impressive in qualifying and will have a home crowd to help her in Melbourne. She is capable of upsetting her more experienced opponent.

Prediction: Aiava in 3

Andreas: Aiava did well to qualify for the Australian Open main draw, marking her Australian Open main draw appearance in 2021. The big question is, could she win her first Grand Slam match? Minnen’s ranking has largely slipped during 2024, and although more consistent than the Aussie, I think Aiava’s qualifying success should give her the confidence necessary to pull off the upset.

Prediction: Aiava in 3

Arantxa Rus vs Olga Danilovic

Ilemona: Arantxa Rus and Olga Danilovic are set to face off in the first round of the Australian Open. Danilovic has shown more promise in recent tournaments. Their previous encounter in 2024 saw Danilovic winning decisively. Given Danilovic’s current form, she is expected to prevail in this matchup.

Prediction: Danilovic in 2

Jordan: While both women prefer playing on clay, Danilovic showed her ability on hard courts by winning the Guangzhou Open at the end of last season. Rus has never looked that comfortable on a hard court and has increasingly become a clay court specialist. Danilovic to triumph in two sets.

Prediction: Danilovic in 2

Andreas: This should be an exciting battle of lefties. Danilovic is just shy of her career-high ranking of #51, while Rus at 34-years-old clinched a career-best 20 wins during the 2024 season. Danilovic recently won a title in China last October, and should be the slight favorite with her confidence and crafty game.

Prediction: Danilovic in 2
Embed from Getty Images

Mayar Sherif vs Dayana Yastremska

Ilemona: Dayana Yastremska is favoured to beat Mayar Sherif in their Australian Open match, with her strong record at the tournament giving her the edge. Sherif’s resilience makes her a tough opponent and Yastremska’s recent form which hasn’t been great should see her make a push for the win.

Prediction: Sherif in 3

Jordan: This should be a good draw for last year’s semifinalist. Yastremska has yet to replicate her level from last year’s Australian Open, but nearly all of Sherif’s best results come on clay. The Ukrainian is capable of winning comfortably.

Prediction: Yastremska in 2

Andreas: Sherif has prioritized WTA 125 tournaments as of late, but she hasn’t won a tour-level match since the French Open. Yastremska will be under a lot of pressure as a defending semifinalist, but she should be able to attack Sherif’s weaker serve and get through this match.

Prediction: Yastremska in 2

Main photo credit: Angela Wilhelm USAToday Sports Syndication: Asheville Citizen-Times

Expect plenty of entertaining tennis on day two at the Australian Open.
