Who will advance?

Australian Open Day 2 Predictions

Naomi Osaka vs Caroline Garcia

Ilemona: This promises to be one of the standout matches in the first round, Naomi Osaka showed glimpses of her best before being forced to retire due to injury in the final in Auckland. Her fitness levels will greatly determine the outcome of this match as the level she displayed in Auckland will stoppable.

Prediction: Osaka in 2

Jordan: Osaka’s run to the final of the ASB Classic was a great start to the year. Unfortunately, she had to retire from the final with an injury and admitted before the tournament that her MRI scan for the problem did not go as well as hoped. Garcia’s level is wildly unpredictable, but her illustrious opponent’s physical issues gives her a great chance of beating Osaka in Melbourne for the second consecutive year.

Prediction: Garcia in 3

Andreas: This should be a fun popcorn match on Rod Laver Arena. Garcia won the pair’s last Australian Open match 6-4 7-6 (2), but I like Osaka to reverse the outcome this time. The two-time Australian Open champion looked good in Auckland before an injury in the final, and has seemed to shake off those injury concerns in the last week. Garcia hasn’t played yet in 2025, as her ranking is almost out of the Top 60.

Prediction: Osaka in 3
Embed from Getty Images

Liudmila Samsonova vs Kamila Rakhimova

Jordan: Samsonova will hope to hit the ground running at the Australian Open after an Ilemona: Liudmila Samsonova’s powerful serve and aggressive baseline game make her the favorite against Kamila Rakhimova. Rakhimova will need to extend rallies and disrupt Samsonova’s rhythm to stay competitive.

Prediction: Samsonova in 2

underwhelming 2024 season. Rakhimova’s style has the potential to make things awkward for her, though. Samsonova often breaks down against opponents that focus on extending the rallies and that could also happen here.

Prediction: Rakhimova in 3

Andreas: Samsonova had to retire in the semifinals of Adelaide against Madison Keys, casting some doubt on this match. Rakhimova is 1-2 in 2025 so far, and has often struggled to play her best against Top 30 opponents. If Samsonova can stay healthy, she should reach the second round.

Prediction: Samsonova in 2

Sara Bejlek vs Caroline Dolehide

Ilemona: Caroline Dolehide’s powerful game makes her the favorite against Sara Bejlek, who relies more on consistency and court coverage. If Dolehide dictates with her serve and forehand, she should have the edge.

Prediction: Dolehide in 3

Jordan: Bejlek impressed during qualifying to reach the main draw. Dolehide’s powerful forehand and athleticism are still better than Bejlek’s at their best. The American is backed do find enough of that level to win.

Prediction: Dolehide in 2

Andreas: Bejlek is still searching for a first Grand Slam win, currently 0-4 in first rounds. Meanwhile, Dolehide hasn’t played in 2025, and her form has somewhat stagnated throughout the season. With Bejlek qualifying for the main draw and having match play behind her, I’m picking the underdog here in a three-setter.

Prediction: Bejlek in 3
Embed from Getty Images

Danka Kovinic vs Lulu Sun

Ilemona: Lulu Sun is the higher ranked of the two but her form late does not give her a lot of separation from her opponent in terms of the chance they have at advancing here. I will back Lulu Sun to have a turn around and grab the win in what can come down to a coin toss.

Prediction: Sun in 3

Jordan: Kovinic made the third round of the Australian Open and is entertaining at her best. However, the fast -improving Sun is the favorite to beat the Montenegrin. Her formidable left-handed forehand should work particularly well against Kovinic.

Prediction: Sun in 2

Andreas: This is Sun’s sophomore season on tour, coming off a huge breakthrough at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships. She’s yet to win a match in 2025, and is on a four-match losing streak dating back to last August. Kovinic plays a counterpunching brand of tennis, and will certainly look to force errors from a possibly inconsistent Sun. Going for the upset here.

Prediction: Kovinic in 3

Main photo credit: Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

The stage is set for an exciting second day at the Australian Open.
