But who will reach the round of 64 at the Australian Open?

Australian Open Day 2 Predictions

Ajla Tomljanovic vs Ashlyn Krueger

Ilemona: Ajla Tomljanovic’s experience and defensive skills would have made her the natural favorite against Ashlyn Krueger. However, Krueger’s powerful game could trouble Tomljanovic if she struggles with rhythm in her quest for match fitness after return from injury.

Prediction: Krueger in 3

Jordan: This is an interesting matchup. The more experienced Tomljanovic is craftier on the court than Krueger. However, Krueger’s formidable power and improvements in recent years make the favorite against an opponent who is past her prime.

Prediction: Krueger in 2

Andreas: Krueger had a big week in Adelaide by reaching the quarterfinals, but did retire mid-match against Jessica Pegula due to a thigh injury. Tomljanovic typically doesn’t play her best in front of her home fans and notably has a 5-9 record at the Australian Open. If Krueger’s fitness holds up, she should win this match.

Prediction: Krueger in 3

Embed from Getty Images

Maya Joint vs Jessica Pegula

Ilemona: Jessica Pegula’s experience and solid baseline game make her a strong favorite against Maya Joint. Joint will need to play aggressively to stand a chance, but Pegula’s consistency should be too much to handle.

Prediction: Pegula in 2

Jordan: This could be a tricky opening round for Pegula after 18-year-old Joint’s impressive run to the semifinal in Hobart. Pegula missed the opening week of the season with an injury but then reached the final of the Adelaide International. The US Open runner-up should still win if she is fit and fresh, but home favorite Joint is capable of latching onto any lapses.

Prediction: Pegula in 2

Andreas: An underrated first round match is on the cards here, as Joint recently made a big run to the Hobart semifinals, while Pegula fell in a close Adelaide final to Madison Keys. The Aussie should have nothing to lose, while Pegula — a victim to an early upset at the last Australian Open — might be nervous. This match could go the distance, with Pegula having the consistency to win in the end.

Prediction: Pegula in 3

Karolina Muchova vs Nadia Podoroska

Ilemona: Karolina Muchova’s all-court game and Grand Slam experience make her the favorite against Nadia Podoroska. Podoroska’s baseline consistency could test Muchova, but the Czech’s variety and power give her the edge.

Prediction: Muchova in 2

Jordan: The entertaining Muchova should be comfortable here. Podoroska is better on clay and is not suited to dealing with the Czech’s variety. She will do well to make this competitive.

Prediction: Muchova in 2

Andreas: Muchova played phenomenal tennis at the United Cup, taking out top players such as Jasmine Paolini along the way. Podoroska’s ranking has fallen to just inside the Top 100, as Muchova should be the heavy favorite to reach the second round, as long as her fitness holds up.

Prediction: Muchova in 2
Embed from Getty Images

Rebecca Sramkova vs Katie Volynets

Ilemona: Katie Volynets’ experience at this level make her the slight favorite against Rebecca Sramkova. Sramkova’s aggressive style could trouble Volynets if she finds her range early, but Volynets’ steadiness couple with the fact Sramkova hasn’t found her best this year gives her the edge in longer rallies.

Prediction: Volynets in 3

Jordan: Volynets is one of the grittiest players on the WTA Tour and has a great attitude no matter what the score is. However, she might find this matchup challenging. Sramkova’s progress in the final months of last season was incredible and she usually thrives most against players who do not hit with overwhelming pace.

Prediction: Sramkova in 2

Andreas: Sramkova is an interesting player to watch on the WTA Tour, who put together a 24-10 record during the 2024 season. However, she is winless in 2025, and Volynets has played steady tennis in her first two tournaments. Going for the small upset here, as Sramkova may be feeling the pressure backing up such a great 2024.

Prediction: Volynets in 3

Main photo credit: Mike Frey-USA TODAY Sports

It promises to be an entertaining second day at Melbourne Park.
