But who will reach the second round?

Australian Open Day 2 Predictions

Coco Gauff vs Sofia Kenin

Ilemona: Coco Gauff should be the clear favorite against Sofia Kenin, given her strong form of late and Kenin’s struggles with consistency. Gauff comes into this tournament as one of the favorites for the title and should make easy work of this first round match.

Prediction: Gauff in 2

Jordan: Kenin famously upset Gauff at the 2023 Wimbledon championships. However, this is a very different Gauff, and Kenin is too inconsistent to rely on. The world No. 3 to win comfortably.

Prediction: Gauff in 2

Andreas: This is one of the toughest openers that Gauff could get in this tournament. Not only does Kenin lead the head-to-head, but her two wins over Gauff came at Grand Slams, one of them at the 2020 Australian Open. However, Gauff looked sharp at the United Cup, and should win this in a close match if her serve and forehand holds up.

Prediction: Gauff in 2
Embed from Getty Images

Zeynep Sonmez vs Talia Gibson

Ilemona: Zeynep Sonmez and Talia Gibson are evenly matched here, but Gibson’s home crowd support might be a factor. If Gibson can stay aggressive, she could make it competitive, but Sonmez’s steadiness makes her the slight favorite.

Prediction: Sonmez in 3

Jordan: Sonmez is the more seasoned player, but her performances on hard courts can be patchy. Gibson is incredibly talented and players like her can come alive in front of home crowds. It will likely be a battle, but the 20-year-old could pull it off.

Prediction: Gibson in 3

Andreas: These young players will make their second appearance in a Grand Slam by playing in this match. Sonmez ultimately has more experience on the WTA Tour, with 11 career wins to Gibson’s zero. While Gibson should be able to take advantage of the home crowd behind her, Sonmez’s experience will help her reach the second round.

Prediction: Sonmez in 3
Embed from Getty Images

Camila Osorio vs Maria Sakkari

Ilemona: Maria Sakkari’s experience and power should give her the edge over Camila Osorio. Her shaky form in recent months however should give the Colombian a chance at a first win in this matchup but Sakkari should have too much to overcome the test.

Prediction: Sakkari in 2

Jordan: Sakkari’s natural talent on hard courts is considerably higher than Osorio’s. Yet, the Greek has a tendency to crack under pressure against grinders like the Colombian. Sakkari is backed to win, but an upset is possible in this matchup.

Prediction: Sakkari in 3

Andreas: Sakkari’s form continues to wander on the WTA Tour, and now ranked just outside the top 30, she’ll have to make a big run in a Grand Slam to get back to the top. Meanwhile, Osorio is 3-7 at hard-court Grand Slams, and hasn’t been in the best form yet. The Greek should be confident and win in two close sets. I wouldn’t rule out an Osorio upset if the match goes three sets.

Prediction: Sakkari in 2

Elise Mertens vs Viktoria Golubic

Ilemona: Elise Mertens’ solid baseline game and hard-court experience make her the favorite against Viktoria Golubic. Golubic’s variety could test Mertens, but the Belgian’s consistency should give her the edge.

Prediction: Mertens in 2

Jordan: Mertens enters this match after reaching the final in Hobart. Golubic’s game is attractive to watch but she has not been in her prime for a while. The more consistent and solid Mertens should find her way through this match.

Prediction: Mertens in 2

Andreas: Mertens, the 2018 Australian Open semifinalist, played well in Hobart to reach the final. Golubic struggled throughout the 2024 season, but played well in the qualifying to get here, not dropping a set. The Belgian has to be the favorite, but Golubic could pull off the upset if she fires her one-handed backhand on all cylinders.

Prediction: Mertens in 2

Main photo credit: Mike Frey-USA TODAY Sports

Expect plenty of entertaining tennis on day two at the Australian Open with 28 matches on the slate in Melbourne.
