This is exactly the type of win he’ll need plenty of this year. After becoming a 2-time ATP 500 champion in 2024, the next step for the Frenchman has to be his first deep run either at a Grand Slam or at an ATP 1000 event.

Fils has been on a brilliant trajectory for years, finishing runner-up at 2021 French Open boys’ singles (to Luca Van Assche), before enjoying a quick rise in 2023 to jump from outside the Top 250 straight into the Top 50 during that season. Last year did feel like his progress slowed down a bit as the consistency just wasn’t going up and he wasn’t producing solid results week in, week out. But with the two incredible tournaments in Hamburg (including a 3-hour and 31-minute win over Alexander Zverev) and Tokyo, the Frenchman reminded us exactly why we were so high on him in the first place.

Struggling in certain matchups

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Matteo Arnaldi, Ugo Humbert – what do these players have in common? They’ve been stopping Fils from progressing any further in many of the so-called “big events” (Grand Slams + ATP 1000s). It might seem a little weird to focus on specific matchups, but based on these rivalries we can identify certain problems with the Frenchman’s game.

Davidovich Fokina lost to Fils twice in 2024, but was the culprit behind his Roland Garros and Wimbledon opening-round losses in 2023. Matteo Arnaldi leads the head-to-head against him 5-0 with all five matches coming in important tournaments–ATP 1000s, Grand Slams, Olympics. Arnaldi and Davidovich Fokina have something in common. While against other opponents they might often struggle with shot selection and end up spraying errors if they opt for an overly aggressive approach, coming up against Fils they just lock in and know exactly what to do. They shrink the court and don’t have to press much to make the Frenchman overhit.

Fils is also 1-4 down in the head-to-head to Ugo Humbert, recently getting his first win against him in the ATP 500 Tokyo final. But even that was such a struggle and with his countryman holding a match point to take it in straights, it was a good representation of why this matchup is so tough for the 20-year-old. Humbert’s flat ball coming at his forehand is a nightmare to accelerate through with the extreme grip the Frenchman has on his spin-heavy shot and he’s forced to defend in his deep backhand corner a lot more than he likes (the lefty serves on out wide on the ad-side are nasty for him too, see what Learner Tien did to Fils recently).

Embed from Getty Images

Relying on physicality to get the win

These players tend to turn the biggest asset of the 20-year-old (the crazy spin/pace combination on his forehand) into a weakness, while further exploiting the deficiencies of his backhand. But it’s not like the Frenchman is fighting a losing battle here. Continuing to improve his spot-serving and return can let him take over rallies without getting into any unpleasant extended patterns. He’s an incredible athlete and tapping into that more might lead to amazing results.

The recent NextGen Finals edition wasn’t a good event for him as a whole, but he did have one unplayable showing against Jakub Mensik. The way he was able to operate in his backhand corner out of position was just otherworldly, coming up with a successful passing shot after passing shot on the run. In terms of using his backhand offensively, the first two sets against Hubert Hurkacz at Wimbledon still stand out. When Fils can engage with another top player in that backhand-to-backhand trade and often come out on top, that’s when he’s at his strongest as you know the other parts of his game will follow suit.

Sunday’s performance against Virtanen was more about that ability to extend the point with his athleticism in a matchup where making the opponent hit just one more shot will often be enough. The flat pace of the Finn’s forehand cross-court was overwhelming at first, but since breaking back in the second set Fils made sure that every point needed to be earned by his opponent.

What’s next?

Great patches of play are something we’re used to seeing from Fils and the fact he came up with three consecutive stellar returns at 3-6 4-5 0-15 wasn’t even that surprising. But it’s the rest of the match that the Frenchman also has to be proud of. He never faced a break point again and didn’t let Virtanen get another look with a sloppy error or some sort of a mental slip-up. It was an uncomfortable opening-round opponent playing at a very high level and Fils didn’t just cave in, showing the ability to rely on a back-up plan and a strong mentality.

If he is to go far at an ATP 1000 or a Grand Slam anytime soon, the Frenchman will need wins like the one against Virtanen way more often. It’s tough to say if it can happen at this event already, especially with Humbert looming as a potential third-round encounter. On Wednesday, he’ll take on Quentin Halys in a pretty conventional power-hitter matchup that should be relatively similar to what he faced against Virtanen. It won’t be the end of the world if the Australian Open isn’t that first deep run at a big event for the 20-year-old, but it should come at some point this year if he is to continue his path towards the very top of the sport.

Main Photo Credit: Jerry Lai-USA TODAY Sports

Arthur Fils was about to go two sets to love down to Otto Virtanen on Sunday, before playing a fantastic return game to turn the match on its head.
