However, rather than getting better as the years pass, even winning a single Slam seems increasingly unlikely each year. 2024 was by far the worst year for Tsitsipas since 2018, and the signs are that it might get worse before it gets better.

Tsitsipas’s 2025 Outlook

Tsitsipas’s backhand and overall confidence seem to be getting worse as more and more players believe that they can beat him. He has always been a player who thrives in certain conditions and struggles in others (for instance, he has many deep runs at the Australian Open and French Open, but not a single quarterfinal at Wimbledon and not even a fourth round at the US Open).

In 2024, his only saving grace was a fantastic run in his beloved Monte Carlo, where he won a third title in four years playing some amazing tennis. Tsitsipas would have already dropped out of the top 20 without that run. Honestly, it feels like he is not a top-20 player outside of the clay.

On clay, he is still a top player, and if he is to win a Slam, Roland Garros feels like the best shot.

Tsitsipas was unlucky to face his bête noire Carlos Alcaraz in back-to-back quarterfinals at the French Open. Otherwise, he could have made it further. But Alcaraz will still be there going forward, and so will others who will believe they can beat the Greek. Outside clay, the Australian Open is easily his best big tournament, but right now, there’s little confidence that he can match his deep runs from years past.

At the end of 2024, Tsitsipas finally got rid of his father as a coach and seemed ready to make changes.

2025 will be a decisive year for him; he has been quickly losing ground, not only to Sinner and Alcaraz but to the top 10 in general (he didn’t manage to beat a single top 10 player outside Monte Carlo in 2024).

2025 feels like a year whether he will either take a big leap, make up for lost ground, and contend for big titles regularly, or simply disappear for good leaving the upper echelons of tennis without a one-handed backhand player for the foreseeable future.

Main Photo Credit: Danielle Parhizkaran – USA TODAY Sports

While it feels that he has been around forever, Stefanos Tsitsipas is only 26 years old and should have a long career ahead of him.
