Alexander Zverev<\/a> admitted that his exit from Wimbledon<\/a> in 2024 was “very, very bitter” after initially playing what he believed to be the best grass tennis of his career. The World No. 2 has never advanced beyond the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, and his latest attempt ended in heartbreak during the fourth round.<\/p>\n

Seeded fourth at the All England Club, Zverev showcased dominant performances in the early rounds, defeating Roberto Carballes Baena, Marcos Giron, and Cameron Norrie without dropping a set. However, his run abruptly stopped in the fourth round against 13th seed Taylor Fritz. Despite leading by two sets to love, the German tennis star struggled physically and ultimately succumbed to Fritz’s relentless play.<\/p>\n

The 27-year-old later revealed that a knee injury sustained early in his match against Norrie significantly hampered his physical capabilities, impacting his performance against Fritz. Despite the setback, the German’s 2024 season was marked by consistency and success, as he finished second in the ATP rankings behind Jannik Sinner<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Reflection on the Wimbledon Disappointment<\/h2>\n

Speaking to Tennis Magazin<\/a> in Germany, Zverev expressed his frustration and reflected on his disappointment at his Wimbledon exit.<\/p>\n

“I had a very stable season, except for the few tournaments where I had real physical problems,” Zverev said. “I was one set away from winning Roland Garros. I still think, and I stand by it that I played my best tennis at Wimbledon this year, for the first time in my career.<\/p>\n

“I have never played as well on grass as I did before my injury. That was very, very bitter for me because I really saw the opportunities for the first time in my life on grass.<\/p>\n

“I won two Masters titles, I played big finals, but at the end of the day, I want to go one step further.”<\/p>\n

Despite the bitter disappointment of Wimbledon, Zverev’s 2024 season featured significant achievements. The German claimed titles at the Masters 1000 events in Rome and Paris-Bercy and reached the finals at the Hamburg Open and the French Open<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The German tennis star at Roland Garros was heartbreakingly close to his first Grand Slam title. He led Carlos Alcaraz by two sets to one in the final before the young Spaniard mounted an extraordinary comeback. Similarly, at the Australian Open<\/a>, he let a two-set lead slip against Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals.<\/p>\n

In the latter half of the season, the 27-year-old showcased resilience, claiming the Paris Masters title and reaching the semifinals of the ATP Finals. Looking ahead to 2025, Zverev will enter the season as the second seed at the Australian Open, hoping to break his Grand Slam duck. His campaign will begin at the United Cup, where he aims to lead Germany to another title.<\/p>\n
