Injuries, and lots of them, with some world class tennis sandwiched in between. Finals in Palmero plus Beijing plus a run to the US Open semifinal means she still sits an impressive #22 in the rankings. Nevertheless, it has still been somewhat of a “what could’ve been” season.

Karolina Muchova 2024 in Review

A Frustrating Start on the Sidelines

For Muchova 2023 was a career best season. She reach the Roland Garros final, the US Open semifinal and consequently qualified for the WTA finals. Her tennis at times was spell-binding, at times a hybrid between craftiness like Roger Federer and the grit of one who has had to fight so many off-court battles. You guessed it though, she missed out through injury.

Her composure posed a threat to anyone on the big stage, meanwhile her incredibly effective backhand slice separated her from most of the WTA Tour.

We had to wait until the grass season to catch our first glimpse of the twenty-eight year old. The two-time Wimbledon quarterfinalist made it three consecutive first round exits on the prestigious grass courts. She showed signs of rust throughout her first round exit to a resurging Paula Badosa and really struggled to implement her game style on to the Spaniard’s. To see her outplayed so comfortably on the backhand wing was a sign just how far she was from her A-game, all be it understandably so.

An encouaging Week in Palmero

Back on the clay, where she has the memories of taking Iga Swiatek to three sets on Court Philippe Chatrier, she began to build some momentum. In Palmero, she reached the final, losing just a set in the process before facing Zheng Qinwen. Although she would lose a closely fought battle, with Zheng just weeks from lifting Olympic gold, this result was nothing to be ashamed of.

Embed from Getty Images

New York Exploits

After a first round loss at the Olympics, she turned her attention to the hard court season, where she would impress. In Cincinnati, she ran into Jessica Pegula, and lost narrowly over three sets. In New York, she put her foot on the accelerator. Defeating the likes of Naomi Osaka in the process, she reached the semifinals without dropping a single set. The question became, could she go one better than the year before? Ultimately it was a challenge too far, and Jessica Pegula would get the better of her once more, but she could leave with her head held high.

Hard Court Momentum Takes it toll

High on confidence, Muchova signed up for a run of tournaments. The balancing act of fatigue and momentum is always tough, perhaps she tipped the scales too much. Another excellent run including a victory against Aryna Sabalenka and revenge taken against Zheng, saw Coco Gauff awaiting in the Beijing final. Unfortunately, the world #22 seemed to be completely out of energy in a humiliating 1-6 3-6 loss. After skipping Wuhan, she returned to action in Ningbo. Perhaps, it was a little too early though. During a semifinal against Mirra Andreeva, she suffered another back injury and spent the rest of the season side-lined.

What Can 2025 bring?

As always with Muchova, fitness will likely be the caveat to sustained success at the top of the game. The talent, the tennis IQ, the graft and desire are there, but she cannot escape a frustrating run of injury-problems. But one is given to suspect that if she can in 2025, it could be a year to remember.

Main photo credit: Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

2024 was a frustratingly typical season for Karolina Muchova.
