{"id":73920,"date":"2024-09-28T17:46:14","date_gmt":"2024-09-28T21:46:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/tennis\/?p=73920"},"modified":"2024-09-28T17:46:14","modified_gmt":"2024-09-28T21:46:14","slug":"sinner-could-face-two-year-ban-with-wada-appeal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/tennis\/2024\/09\/28\/sinner-could-face-two-year-ban-with-wada-appeal\/","title":{"rendered":"Jannik Sinner Could Face up to Two-Year Ban with WADA Set to Appeal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Saturday, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) confirmed that it had lodged an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on September 26 in the world No. 1 Jannik Sinner case.<\/p>\n<p>Sinner was found by an independent tribunal of the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) to bear no fault or negligence after twice testing positive for clostebol, a prohibited substance, in March 2024.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A WADA statement read, \u201cIt is WADA\u2019s view that the finding of \u201cno fault or negligence\u201d was not correct under the applicable rules. WADA is seeking a period of ineligibility of between one and two years. WADA is not seeking a disqualification of any results, save that which has already been imposed by the tribunal of first instance.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sinner is the world&#8217;s No. 1 player and has had an outstanding season so far, winning the Australian and US Opens this year.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"f6av2V5uS-hrQ0doh4qw_w\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/2173686098\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'f6av2V5uS-hrQ0doh4qw_w',sig:'2tNO2BF06BFbJI1iP_f32_hsHpaGj0MgM_LjNHdGnN8=',w:'594px',h:'396px',items:'2173686098',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Last month, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced that Sinner failed two drug tests in March \u2014 one during a tournament in Indian Wells, California, and one eight days later \u2014 but that it was determined the banned anabolic steroid Clostebol entered his system unintentionally through a massage from his physiotherapist, Giacomo Naldi.<\/p>\n<p>Sinner\u2019s defence was that his fitness trainer, Umberto Ferrara, purchased an over-the-counter spray that contained Clostebol in Italy, then gave it to Naldi, who used it on a cut finger. Sinner said Naldi then gave him a massage.<\/p>\n<p>The 23-year-old fired his fitness trainer and physiotherapist because of his two positive steroid tests in March and said at his pre-U.S. Open presser that he knew he was innocent.<\/p>\n<p>The controversy surrounding the eventual public relations of the case seemed to cast a cloud over his prospects at the U.S. Open.
