Day 1 of the Paris Olympics tennis tournament is Saturday, and it kicks off the men’s and women’s singles and doubles events. In addition to our regular predictions of all singles matches, as a special treat for you us at LastWordOnTennis will be sharing predictions for the Olympics doubles matches. We also predict half of the day’s matches in a separate article–featuring Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal teaming up<\/a>. Predicting these matches are Damian Kust, Jim Smith, and Yesh Ginsburg. Who do you think will advance? (Note that in Olympic doubles, a third set is a match tiebreak–first team to ten points wins.)<\/p>\n

Paris Olympics Day 1 Men’s Doubles Predictions<\/h2>\n

Dominik Koepfer and Jan-Lennard Struff (Germany) vs Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic (Croatia)<\/h4>\n

Damian:<\/em>
\nMektic\/Pavic are the defending champions and used to dominate the doubles tour, but they haven\u2019t played with each other for about a year. Their prior success and chemistry should probably still count for something though. They have to be slightly cautious here, combos like Struff\u2019s serve and Koepfer\u2019s hand skills tend to be relatively dangerous.
\nPrediction: Mektic and Pavic in 2<\/em><\/p>\n

Jim:<\/em>
\nThe Croatian pair should not be taken lightly. Mate Pavic, in particular, has established himself as one of the world\u2019s best in this format and has won just about every title there is to win. That includes winning the Gold Medal at the Tokyo Olympics with Nikola Mektic. Pavic has also just won the French Open. Jan-Lennard Struff\u2019s power could win the Germans the match, but the Croatians seem the likelier pair.
\nPrediction: Mektic and Pavic in 2<\/em><\/p>\n

Yesh:<\/em>
\nThe Croatians haven\u2019t played together in a while and they\u2019re not at their peaks, but they\u2019re both great doubles players while the German team is just two cobbled-together singles players. The defending Gold Medalists should advance.

Arthur Fils and Ugo Humbert (France) vs Joran Vliegen and Sander Gille (Belgium)<\/h4>\n

Damian:<\/em>
\nGille\/Vliegen shouldn\u2019t be underestimated here, after so many years of playing together they understand each other on the court almost like no other pair in the draw. Fils\/Humbert should be plenty of fun to watch here with the home crowd, but I\u2019m leaning towards the quality Belgian duo who made the quarterfinals at Roland Garros this year.
\nPrediction: Vliegen and Gille in 2<\/em><\/p>\n

Jim:<\/em>
\nSander Gille and Joran Vliegen have the advantage of playing together regularly, but that is where the advantages end for the Belgians. The reality is that the best players compete principally in singles and–whilst doubles does require a different skillset–Arthur Fils and Ugo Humbert\u2019s achievements suggest they are simply better players that Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen.
\nPrediction: Fils and Humbert in 3<\/em><\/p>\n

Yesh:<\/em>
\nOlympic doubles always provides us weird matchups between more talented players against doubles specialists. The crowd might try to help the French pair, but the Belgians are just way too comfortable playing doubles. The Frenchmen aren\u2019t.
