With so many questions regarding other top players, I don\u2019t see anyone except for <strong>Rafael Nadal<\/strong> being much of a threat for Federer in Melbourne.<\/p>\n<h4><em>James: Grigor Dimitrov<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>This may surprise a few, but my favorite for the men\u2019s title is Bulgarian, <strong>Grigor Dimitrov<\/strong>. The World No.3 is coming off the back of a good run to the semi-finals in <strong>Brisbane<\/strong>, and having chosen not to compete in <strong>Sydney<\/strong> this week, has given himself plenty of time to rest and recuperate ahead of what will be a demanding fortnight.<br \/>\n<a id=\"kIviQ_gISsBNnkcGRv7dFQ\" class=\"gie-single\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.co.uk\/detail\/902481652\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color:#a7a7a7;text-decoration:none;font-weight:normal !important;border:none;display:inline-block;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'kIviQ_gISsBNnkcGRv7dFQ',sig:'5g-D_sU6vHCVAM0oeC75_pS1e1C3FuLMCk9-eJJ5eGE=',w:'594px',h:'396px',items:'902481652',caption: true ,tld:'co.uk',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><br \/>\nDimitrov loves playing in <strong>Melbourne<\/strong>, and would arguably have gone on to win the title in 2017, had <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/tennis\/2017\/01\/27\/rafael-nadal-wins-five-set-classic-over-grigor-dimitrov-to-reach-australian-open-final\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Nadal not stopped him in a classic match<\/a>. This year, with question marks hanging over Nadal\u2019s fitness and the Bulgarian\u2019s superior physical strength compared even with the likes of Federer, Dimitrov has the best chance of winning his maiden Grand Slam so far.<\/p>\n<h4><em>Sam: David Goffin<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>At the back end of 2017, no player impressed more than <strong>David Goffin<\/strong>. At the <strong>ATP Tour Finals<\/strong>, he <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/tennis\/2017\/07\/19\/the-return-of-david-goffin\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">demonstrated a mental fortitude<\/a> that showed he is ready to progress to the next stage of his career. With a handful of top names missing or returning on limited fitness, he stands out as someone ready to capitalize. Goffin is due to play Federer in the quarter-finals. He may not be the undisputed best player in tennis for the entirety of 2018, but he&#8217;s only lost six matches on hard courts over the last two seasons. It&#8217;s Federer&#8217;s tournament to lose.<\/p>\n<h4><em>Stefano: Roger Federer<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>Considering the Melbourne court speed is the same as 2017 and none of the real opponents is 100 percent fit, he is clearly the favorite.<\/p>\n<h2>Women&#8217;s Champion<\/h2>\n<h4><em>Brett: <\/em>Venus Williams<\/h4>\n<p>After<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/tennis\/2017\/01\/26\/panelists-predictions-australian-open-womens-final-venus-williams-vs-serena-williams\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"> reaching the final<\/a> last year, I think <strong>Venus Williams<\/strong> is ready to take it one step further with <strong>Serena Williams<\/strong> out. She\u2019ll be well rested after losing a tough match to <strong>Angelique Kerber<\/strong> in Sydney which might help in the long-run. Unfazed by her critics, Halep has already won her first title of the year in <strong>Shenzhen<\/strong>, and she appears ready to finally silence the doubters and claim her first Grand Slam title in Melbourne.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/ausopen.com\/draws?events=2446&amp;player=\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">draw<\/a> could put her up against the likes of <strong>Ashleigh Barty<\/strong>, <strong>Petra Kvitova<\/strong>, <strong>Karolina Pliskova<\/strong>, <strong>Caroline Garcia<\/strong>, or <strong>Garbine Muguruza<\/strong>. Halep has the game and the physical strength to beat all of the aforementioned opponents, and with Serena withdrawing at the last minute, this will be an opportunity to win a Grand Slam that Halep will not want to miss.<\/p>\n<h4><em>Sam: <\/em>Angelique Kerber<\/h4>\n<p>Unlike the men&#8217;s draw, the women&#8217;s is nicely balanced and throws up so many different plausible variations Kerber is the player who has stood out in the build-up and, unlike most of the field, knows how to win a Grand Slam. Halep won Shenzhen and, assuming she can handle the pressure, she&#8217;s as good of a pick as any.<\/p>\n<h4><em>Stefano: <\/em>Caroline Wozniacki<\/h4>\n<p>It is very tough to pick a winner in a draw where really a lot of players have a chance to win the title. I will go with <strong>Caroline Wozniacki<\/strong> for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/tennis\/2017\/10\/29\/caroline-wozniacki-wins-the-biggest-title-of-her-career-at-the-wta-finals\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">form she has shown<\/a> in the last few months.<\/p>\n<h2>Men&#8217;s Dark Horse<\/h2>\n<h4><em>Brett:\u00a0<\/em>Gael Monfils<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Gael Monfils<\/strong> started off the season on a high note, winning the title in <strong>Doha<\/strong> by defeating <strong>Andrey Rublev<\/strong> in the final. Last season he was never able to find form due to injuries. He looked much better then his ranking suggests in Doha, and I wouldn\u2019t be surprised if he carried some momentum into the Australian Open, even with a potential match with Djokovic in the 2nd round.<br \/>\n<a id=\"pGrYqM_WThdSdKxJMjHBUg\" class=\"gie-single\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.co.uk\/detail\/901910924\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color:#a7a7a7;text-decoration:none;font-weight:normal !important;border:none;display:inline-block;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'pGrYqM_WThdSdKxJMjHBUg',sig:'AADrZXmVHaQb31ZkbInBbSUJWGTK8kdNsKrrwxwTt1c=',w:'594px',h:'396px',items:'901910924',caption: true ,tld:'co.uk',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n<h4><em>James: <\/em>Juan Martin Del Potro<\/h4>\n<p>Being a <strong>Juan Martin Del Potro<\/strong> fan, I cannot ignore the fine form that the Argentine has displayed in 2018 so far. Del Potro is <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/tennis\/2018\/01\/12\/auckland-final-preview-agut-del-potro\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">in the <strong>Auckland<\/strong> final<\/a>, before flying back to Melbourne in time to face <strong>Frances Tiafoe<\/strong> in the opening round of the Australian Open. Tiafoe will be a tricky opponent for Del Potro, but the \u2018Tower of Tandil\u2019 has the experience and mental strength to overpower the young American.<\/p>\n<p>Del Potro is in the same half of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ausopen.com\/draws\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">draw<\/a> as Federer, and the prospect of these two legends of the game facing off against each other is enough to attract even non-tennis fans. If Del Potro can get past his tough two opening rounds (he could face <strong>Karen Khachanov<\/strong> in round two), then he could be set for a memorable run in Melbourne this year.<\/p>\n<h4><em>Sam: <\/em>Dominic Thiem<\/h4>\n<p>The buzz around <strong>Dominic Thiem<\/strong> seems to have <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/tennis\/2017\/11\/15\/dominic-thiem-return-serve-hold-back\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">died down in the last year<\/a> or so but a kind draw means he has a strong chance of reaching his first hard court Slam quarter-final at least. The other seeds in his quarter include <strong>Roberto Bautista Agut<\/strong>, <strong>Adrian Mannarino<\/strong>, and <strong>Stan Wawrinka<\/strong>. Thiem will be hugely disappointed if he does not manage to emerge from that section, especially given he looked impressive in reaching the Doha semi-finals.<br \/>\n<a id=\"TMnnuXFGRqRkfKf76MZ3xA\" class=\"gie-single\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.co.uk\/detail\/903144536\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color:#a7a7a7;text-decoration:none;font-weight:normal !important;border:none;display:inline-block;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'TMnnuXFGRqRkfKf76MZ3xA',sig:'ZXzAzosgQxA_1BDEFxCT5UePw5VT_2kfC9sXsYrWcjE=',w:'594px',h:'396px',items:'903144536',caption: true ,tld:'co.uk',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n<h4><em>Steen: <\/em>Kevin Anderson<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Kevin Anderson<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/tennis\/2017\/09\/10\/rafael-nadal-defeats-kevin-anderson-win-3rd-us-open-16th-grand-slam-overall\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">reached the US Open final<\/a> so he&#8217;s not that much of a dark horse. That said, <strong>Jack Sock<\/strong> has had hip problems and is the top seed in his section. Grigor Dimitrov and <strong>Nick Kyrgios<\/strong> are beatable but tough opponents on his path to the semis, and Nadal, if healthy, likely awaits at that stage. Anderson&#8217;s game is best on this surface, and he can&#8217;t be counted out.<\/p>\n<h4><em>Stefano: <\/em>Fabio Fognini<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Fabio Fognini<\/strong> has been showing good form in Sydney to start the year. On top of this, he is one of the fittest players on tour in long matches and showed in the past that he can beat almost anyone on his good day.<br \/>\n<a id=\"CssK5VjURopiLgJRxdrl7g\" class=\"gie-single\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.co.uk\/detail\/904071218\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color:#a7a7a7;text-decoration:none;font-weight:normal !important;border:none;display:inline-block;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'CssK5VjURopiLgJRxdrl7g',sig:'cUK_94Iy2lS1Bmv5lu7oAF9Rd31bkEdvP4HfZz58SsM=',w:'594px',h:'396px',items:'904071218',caption: true ,tld:'co.uk',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n<h2>Women&#8217;s Dark Horse<\/h2>\n<h4><em>Brett: <\/em>Naomi Osaka<\/h4>\n<p>Not too many people are talking about <strong>Naomi Osaka<\/strong> heading into the Australian Open. I think she has a favorable draw that has a chance to open up after the first couple days. If she can manage to find form early on she can make a run.<\/p>\n<h4><em>James: <\/em>Julia Goerges<\/h4>\n<p>Having written a hopeful summary of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordontennis.com\/2017\/12\/27\/wta-year-review-11-15\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Julia Goerges\u2019<\/a><\/strong> season prior to Christmas, I feel a slight sense of obligation to mention her name in this category. Nonetheless, the fact is that Goerges played incredibly well in the latter stages of last season, and the Australian Open draw has been kind to her this year. The likable German could face French journeywoman <strong>Alize Cornet<\/strong> in round two, and she features in the same half of the draw as out-of-sorts <strong>US Open<\/strong> champion, <strong>Sloane Stephens<\/strong>. The stage is set for Goerges to finally make her mark in a Grand Slam tournament, something she has struggled with throughout her career.<br \/>\n<a id=\"hNcY_4meQMl2evQ2JKfsHA\" class=\"gie-single\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.co.uk\/detail\/902005094\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color:#a7a7a7;text-decoration:none;font-weight:normal !important;border:none;display:inline-block;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'hNcY_4meQMl2evQ2JKfsHA',sig:'_Jhd7BMjdWt_vVYuqPD2-zfx4ytq1rpBlEwnTrqpmhk=',w:'594px',h:'396px',items:'902005094',caption: true ,tld:'co.uk',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n<h4><em>Sam: <\/em>Ashleigh Barty<\/h4>\n<p>If she can navigate through two tricky opening matches &#8211; against rising star <strong>Aryna Sabalenka<\/strong> and in-form <strong>Camila Giorgi<\/strong> &#8211; then expect Ashleigh Barty to build up a head of steam and feature prominently in the second week of her home Slam. The Barty party is in full flow nowadays and the youngster has, not only the backing of the crowd but also bundles of form to carry into Melbourne.<\/p>\n<h4><em>Steen: <\/em>Maria Sharapova<\/h4>\n<p>Like her or not Sharapova has the talent to win this tournament, and with so many other players lacking her experience and mettle, she could pull out a noteworthy run to the final.<br \/>\n<a id=\"5aTpv8agS7RvsPGQq1JhIg\" class=\"gie-single\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.co.uk\/detail\/903595362\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color:#a7a7a7;text-decoration:none;font-weight:normal !important;border:none;display:inline-block;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'5aTpv8agS7RvsPGQq1JhIg',sig:'dxZ41nf9oQ_NBAfXfCfDHcyP2JlrWu9Q0n1m7j8Si0c=',w:'594px',h:'356px',items:'903595362',caption: true ,tld:'co.uk',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n<h4><em>Stefano: <\/em>Camila Giorgi<\/h4>\n<p>Camila Giorgi has demonstrated in the last year how dangerous she can be with her super flat hitting. This year, the Italian seems to also have more confidence and has, so far, remained injury free.<\/p>\n<h2>Men&#8217;s Early Exit<\/h2>\n<h4><em>Brett:\u00a0<\/em>Stan Wawrinka<\/h4>\n<p>You just have to wonder how ready Stan Wawrinka will be when the tournament begins. He hasn\u2019t played a match since <strong>Wimbledon<\/strong> in July, and recently withdrew from the tiebreak tens exhibition event this past week. Coming back at a slam probably isn\u2019t the best idea since he hasn\u2019t played in a while, but it\u2019ll be interesting to see what kind of form he\u2019s in.<\/p>\n<h4><em>James: <\/em>Jo-Wilfried Tsonga<\/h4>\n<p>Charming though he may be, it seems like <strong>Jo-Wilfried Tsonga<\/strong> might be one of the first high-profile casualties of the 2018 Australian Open. The World No.15 has been handed a potentially insurmountable challenge in the second round, where he may play the winner of a match-up between <strong>Stefanos Tsitsipas<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/tennis\/2017\/08\/25\/denis-shapovalov-real-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Denis Shapovalov<\/strong><\/a>. Both of these men have been touted as the future of men\u2019s tennis, and in Shapovalov\u2019s case, he even has a memorable Grand Slam run to support his case.<br \/>\n<a id=\"DPYQoB_1QSZ898zubzk0IA\" class=\"gie-single\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.co.uk\/detail\/879870692\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color:#a7a7a7;text-decoration:none;font-weight:normal !important;border:none;display:inline-block;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'DPYQoB_1QSZ898zubzk0IA',sig:'x_-mgYXSr0cHnehTcoGPVb27Vfmd1OPyFUqxKJgn9Oo=',w:'594px',h:'388px',items:'879870692',caption: true ,tld:'co.uk',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><br \/>\nTsonga has relied on his powerful forehand and serve throughout his career, at the expense of his backhand and slice. Both Tsitsipas and Shapovalov possess an all-around game that Tsonga will not be able to match, and experience will not be enough to get the Frenchman over the line.<\/p>\n<h4><em>Sam: <\/em>Novak Djokovic<\/h4>\n<p>It&#8217;s hard at this point to really trust that right elbow. With a revamped serve and a lack of quality game time, it&#8217;s hard to see Djokovic coping well with the ardors of five-set tennis. Throw an unwanted second round match against Monfils and there is little chance of the Serbian making much of an impression on this event.
