She is about to make her National Bank Open debut with a healthy 13-6 win-loss record on hard courts in the first three months of 2023.
Mayar Sherif remains just a few points away from her top 30 debut with titles in Parma WTA 250 and three 125k events on clay courts in the last 12 months, along with semifinal in Palermo and quarterfinal in Madrid. However, her performances on other surfaces in this period have been below per.
The Egyptian, also debuting in this event, has gone 5-10 outside of clay this season, with only three of those victories coming in completed matches. She does have two wins over top 10 opponents, beating Maria Sakkari in Parma last year and Caroline Garcia in Madrid this year, both on dirt.

Marketa Vondrousova has not been beaten in the first round since falling to compatriot Karolina Pliskova in Dubai. She is 22-4 against players outside the top 20 this season (14-0 since the start of April), which should help in her first match playing as a major champion.

Prediction: Vondrousova in 2
Embed from Getty Images

Anastasia Potapova vs Karolina Muchova

Head-to-Head: 1-1

Anastasia Potapova retired in the first round of Washington DC after picking up a left ankle injury. This is concerning news for a player who has achieved five quarterfinals or better results this season, including winning her first hard-court title in Linz and making the semifinals in Stuttgart and Birmingham.
Karolina Muchova’s highly productive year seems to have cooled off a bit after her physically demanding runner-up campaign in Paris two months ago. She could only play Wimbledon in the grass swing and lost to Jule Niemeier in the first round. Recently, she fell to Rebecca Sramkova in the second round on the hard courts of Warsaw.
Anastasia Potapova saved two match points to secure a 1-6, 7-6, 6-0 win in the 2019 Brisbane qualifiers, avenging a 2017 clay-court ITF loss in Prague. Karolina Muchova will be hunting for her first win at the National Bank Open, having lost in the first round in Montreal to Oceane Dodin in 2021.

Prediction: Potapova in 3
Embed from Getty Images
[cta id=591 type=cta]

Marta Kostyuk vs Zheng Qinwen

Head-to-Head: First meeting

Marta Kostyuk is coming off a quarterfinals loss to Liudmila Samsonova at the Citi Open last week. She will make her National Bank Open debut with a combined 22-15 win-loss record for the year (18-9 on hard courts). She will look to extend that record here in her first round clash against Zheng Qinwen. Zheng who lost in the first round in Washington will be looking to turn the tide as she hunts for her first ever win in US Open series in North America. The Chinese player should make a better account for herself here though, with the loss to Keys coming only in her first match back since winning her first WTA title in Palermo.

Prediction: Kostyuk in 3
Embed from Getty Images

Victoria Azarenka vs Sloane Stephens

Head-to-Head: 4-5 Azarenka

Victoria Azarenka completely dominated against Magda Linette in the first round on Monday and will next face Sloane Stephens in round two in what would be their 10th meeting. Azarenka controls a slight advantage in the head-to-head 5-4 (3-3 on hard courts) and winning their most recent match in the second round in Rome earlier this year in straight sets.
Sloane Stephens got off to a good start in her first round clash against the often difficult Anahelina Kalinina in a little under two hours. The American who has a good record in North American events will be looking to extend that win here beyond the second round.

Prediction: Azarenka in 2

Main Photo Credit: Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

WTA Montreal Masters presents a lineup of mouthwatering matchups and we here at LWOT will be in hand to bring you all the exciting previews and predictions.
