He recovered from a break down twice in the second set to beat Skander Mansouri 6-4 6-4. Thiago Agustin Tirante extended his winning streak on hard courts to six matches with his 7-6 6-2 win over Gonzalo Lama, continuing from where he left off at the Morelos Challenger in late April. And of relevance, he has not dropped a set in all six matches. The second serve still needs a lot of work though, and he’ll struggle to cope with de Minaur’s pace of shots.
Prediction: de Minaur in 2

Embed from Getty Images

Borna Coric vs Jason Jung

Head-to-head: first meeting

Fresh from winning the 2023 Hopman Cup for Croatia alongside Donna Vekic, Borna Coric enters a very important stretch of his season. He’s got Cincinnati points to defend in a few weeks’ time and it’s no-brainer that he cannot afford any mishaps in this kind of matchup. Jason Jung entered the tournament as a lucky loser and upset home wild card Ernesto Escobedo. However, the 34-year-old’s luck will finally run out against Coric’s brick-wall defense.
Prediction: Coric in 2

[cta id=445 type=cta]

Borna Gojo vs Ilya Ivashka

Head-to-head: first meeting

Borna Gojo hammered 20 aces in his three-set win over Cristian Garin. He saved five of seven break points. His next match against Ilya Ivashka should be a serve-oriented battle, which can only favor Gojo from here. Ivashka saved a match point en route to his own three-set win over Kazakhstani qualifier Beibeit Zhukhayev. Ivashka has been woefully out of form for months now, and the fact that his biggest weapon – the serve – is misfiring, tilts this match in the Croat’s direction.
Prediction: Gojo in 2

Embed from Getty Images

Nicolas Jarry vs Gijs Brouwer

Head-to-head: first meeting

Nicolas Jarry wasted no time dispatching home wild card Pacheco Mendez 6-3 6-1 for his second ATP main draw win on hard courts this season. As strange as that sounds, Jarry hadn’t caught fire by mid-February when his ranking was still a lowly 139, and not warranting automatic main draw entry at high profile hard court tournaments.

But his upturn in form has thrust his name among potential nominees for the Improved Player of the Year award. Gijs Brouwer wasn’t too far from Jarry in the rankings at the start of the season but underperformed for the most part. Jarry has a lot more consistency with his serve and a more reliable forehand to overpower the Dutchman, but it will be close.
Prediction: Jarry in 2

Main Photo Main Photo Credit: Zoe Meyers/The Desert Sun/USAToday Sports

Nicolas Jarry, one of the tournament favorites, will face a player very much in his mold on Day 3 of the ATP Mifel Tennis Open in Los Cabos.
