Last year, Broady had already reached this stage of the tournament with a very nice win over Diego Schwartzman on the way, but the lack of ranking points meant that run had no greater impact on his career and he was back to slugging it out at lower levels after the tournament.

However, he went one better this year, reaching the third round again, but beating world #4 Casper Ruud to get there in a stunning match, with a fifth set bagel no less. At age 29, it was the biggest win of his career and one that might well propel a late career resurgence. It also puts him closer to his highest ever ranking (#116), with one more win at this tournament enough to surpass it.

Broady was extremely emotional after the match, both on social networks and on his on-court interview. He mentioned how his mother is always very nervous watching him but he told her ahead of the Ruud match to stay calm because he already collected 80k at this tournament. “My mum doesn’t like watching. I said to my mum yesterday, ‘Look I’ve already won £80k, you can chill out,’” he said.

In the third round, Broady will take on former Wimbledon semifinalist Denis Shapovalov. The Canadian has a far bigger game and upside, but he’s extremely streaky, to put it mildly, and Broady is going to be very confident after what has been the best day of his career and will have the crowd fully on his side. His mom will once again be very nervous for sure, but Broady will certainly make her proud again with another strong effort here.

Whether he gets past Shapovalov or not, the real challenge for Broady going forward will be to replicate this level of play in smaller tournaments all over the world so he can rise up the rankings and not just show up once a year. He has certainly shown the ability to be ranked higher and the wholesome personality he shows makes him an easy player to root for.

Main Photo Credit: Dan Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports

Liam Broady’s run to the third round of Wimbledon has been without a doubt one of the biggest stories of the tournament.
