Predicting this set of matches are Jack Edward, Damian Kust, and Andreas Pelekis. Who do you think will advance?

Wimbledon Day 2 Men’s Predictions

Maxime Cressy vs Laslo Djere

Jack:
Maxime Cressy is extremely comfortable on grass whilst Laslo Djere prefers the grind of clay. The American’s confidence has taken a serious knock this year, however, with double faults and first serve percentage wavering from match to match. Still, the first few days are the fastest of the tournament and Djere is certainly a player there for the taking—Cressy is resilient so I could see him fighting for a much needed win.
Prediction: Cressy in 5

Damian:
Usually, rhythm doesn’t even matter all that much with Cressy, but he seems to be really low on confidence at the moment and is hitting double faults left and right at the moment. Maybe he manages to find his mojo again. You know Djere will ask some tough question though, that’s just who he is.
Prediction: Cressy in 5

Andreas:
Cressy suffered a long losing streak over the past few months, but he was able to break that streak in Eastbourne. Still, his form is way off from where it was in 2022, a time when Cressy took out Auger-Aliassime in the first round of last year’s Wimbledon. Djere may be overlooked on grass; despite being far more skilled on clay, he took a set off of Medvedev in Halle. With that, the Serb might just have the edge against the grass-court specialist.
Prediction: Djere in 5

[cta id=445 type=cta]

Alexander Zverev vs Gijs Brouwer

Jack:
Alexander Zverev making the semifinals of the French Open for the second year in a row dispelled many doubts about his form. Gijs Brouwer is a lefty that hits a big ball, big enough to take a set off Zverev this early in the tournament, but the German will probably find a way to wrap up the match even if things gets hairy.
Prediction: Zverev in 4

Damian:
What a qualifying run it was for Brouwer, especially considering that he was coming into Roehampton on a nine-match losing streak. Zverev is vulnerable on grass, at least to a certain extent. I’ll pick him to come through here, but his issues might start really soon.
Prediction: Zverev in 4

Andreas:
Brouwer was unable to win a match on grass until Wimbledon qualifying, when he ravaged through the draw without dropping a set. Unfortunately for him, this matchup may be too far a stretch. A vulnerable Zverev may drop a set, but the German has too many weapons.
Prediction: Zverev in 4

Embed from Getty Images

Adrian Mannarino vs Alexander Shevchenko

Jack:
Adrian Mannarino has had a stellar grass season. Two quarterfinals, a final, and two Top 10 wins. Alexander Shevchenko will keep the match close with his first-striking ability but Mannarino is in good enough form to make the Russian feel perpetually awkward.
Prediction: Mannarino in 4

Damian:
Mannarino had a leg injury in the Mallorca final, so this is a match where everything can happen. If healthy, he’s a huge favorite here given Shevchenko didn’t even play a warm-up event. If he’s moving like on Saturday, he’ll have no chance to win though.
Prediction: Mannarino in 4

Andreas:
The Frenchman will certainly be a sneaky underdog in the first week of Wimbledon. After defeating Medvedev in the Netherlands, he certainly has the capability to do the exact same thing this week, as they could play in the second round. Schevchenko has an enticing game new to the ATP tour, but Mannarino’s skill on grass will help him.
Prediction: Mannarino in 4

Embed from Getty Images

Andy Murray vs Ryan Peniston

Jack:
Ryan Peniston has had his fair share of wins on a grass court but this has the feel of a match from one of Andy Murray’s two Challenger titles on grass this year. Peniston will put up a fight having had time to practice on the surface but Murray’s serving and patience should be a little too much for the world #267.
Prediction: Murray in 4

Damian:
The veterans have an advantage over the field on grass and it’s really clear in Murray’s case. His smart grinding and first serve were unstoppable in the two grass Challengers he’s won this month. Peniston’s runs in Queen’s were pretty baffling and kind of unexplainable; I don’t think he does it again.
Prediction: Murray in 3

Andreas:
If Murray wants to kickstart an incredible fairytale run, he’ll surely want to get off to a rapid start in this opener. On the fast grass courts, he’ll have to speed up his groundstrokes a bit, and avoid long four or five set matches. Peniston is a solid British player who simply needs an extra gear to reach the Top 100. Ultimately, Murray should be too solid in this one.
Prediction: Murray in 3

Main Photo Credit: Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

Day 2 at Wimbledon will see the conclusion of the first round.
