But who will secure their spot in the last four?

ATP Madrid Quarterfinal Predictions Including

Daniel Altmaier vs Borna Coric

Head-to-head: first meeting

Daniel Altmaier didn’t really come that close against Jurij Rodionov in the final qualifying round, but has somehow made the best run of his career (along with last 16 at Roland Garros) after being awarded a place in the draw as a lucky loser. Pablo Carreno Busta’s withdrawal saw him into the second round without playing a match, but he’s done well to dispatch Oscar Otte, Yannick Hanfmann, and Jaume Munar, all without dropping a set.

It will only get tougher from here though. Borna Coric wasn’t having a great season when he arrived at the ATP Madrid Open, but he is finding his form right now. Particularly in the match against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, the Croat was hitting his groundstrokes very cleanly, whilst his win over the big-serving Hubert Hurkacz was also impressive. Altmaier will need to step up here and it’s not clear whether he still has any more gears to go through. He may take a set, but expect Coric to have the edge.

Prediction: Coric in 3
Embed from Getty Images

Carlos Alcaraz vs Karen Khachanov

Head-to-head: Alcaraz 2-0 Khachanov

Carlos Alcaraz looked down and out against Emil Ruusuvuori in the second round, but saved his best for when he needed it most down break points in the second set. With the fulsome backing of the home crowd, he has been pretty much untouchable ever since. Particularly impressive was the way he neutralized Alexander Zverev’s serve on Tuesday, despite the German’s excellent record in Madrid over the years.

Karen Khachanov keeps going deep at these events, but not actually threatening to win the titles (aside from his triumph five years ago in Bercy). It feels like that trend might continue here. They played last year twice, both times on clay, and the Russian was hammered on both occasions. Maybe the conditions in Madrid give the Russian a better fighting chance and he is probably playing better now than he did last year, but it’s hard to see any outcome but an Alcaraz win after what he did to Zverev in the fourth round.

Prediction: Alcaraz in 2

Main photo credit: Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Two of the four quarterfinals of the 2023 ATP Madrid Open will be played on Wednesday with both matches promising plenty of entertainment.
