Can the Pole provide Pegula with any sort of a challenge?

WTA Madrid Day 4 Predictions

Jacqueline Cristian vs Anastasia Potapova

Head-to-head: Potapova 1-0

Anastasia Potapova is on the rise this year and might very well be one of the next few players to break through into the Top 15, Top 10. She hasn’t done that well in Madrid historically, but it seems like she’s improved enough that it won’t be a concern. While Jacqueline Cristian is a talented player who’s making her way back after an injury-ridden 2022 campaign, she’s definitely a sizeable underdog here.
Prediction: Potapova in 2

Embed from Getty Images

Aliaksandra Sasnovich vs Marie Bouzkova

Head-to-head: First meeting

Marie Bouzkova chose to play a 100K ITF in Oeiras last week instead of the WTA 500 in Stuttgart, but ended up losing to the eventual champion Danka Kovinic in the quarterfinals. She got some momentum though and that’s something Aliaksandra Sasnovich has been lacking recently. These quicker clay conditions in Madrid could be just what the doctor ordered though and give her a chance to punch through Bouzkova’s defense.
Prediction: Sasnovich in 3

Embed from Getty Images

Martina Trevisan vs Eugenie Bouchard

Head-to-head: Trevisan 1-0

Martina Trevisan just recently retired to Beatriz Haddad Maia in Stuttgart, leaving her fitness under a question mark. Regardless, she really could be in trouble here. Eugenie Bouchard had a brilliant run a bit out of nowhere at this venue six years ago and it looks like history might repeat itself. The Canadian has been on fire since the qualifying and has a very nice chance to keep going here.
Prediction: Bouchard in 3

Embed from Getty Images

Jessica Pegula vs Magdalena Frech

Head-to-head: Pegula 1-0

Jessica Pegula made the final in Madrid last year and has definitely been at her best consistent self this season as well, winning at least two matches in all events played (24-7 win/loss record). This is already a big run for Magdalena Frech, who finally qualified for a tournament on her 10th attempt in 2023. The Pole doesn’t really have the firepower to trouble Pegula though and the third seed should find the match easy enough here.
Prediction: Pegula in 2

Main Photo Credit: Mike Frey-USA TODAY Sports

Jessica Pegula was the runner-up in Madrid last year and she’ll be hoping to go deep at the WTA 1000 in the Spanish capital once again.
