We have a slate of first-round matches on Tuesday including the start of Tatjana Maria’s title defense. But the all-Spanish clash between Aliona Bolsova and Sara Sorribes Tormo promises to be a potential humdinger. As always at LWOT, we also predict the rest of the day’s matches. We split them between two articles, featuring Elise Mertens vs Mirjam Bjorklund and Tamara Zidansek vs Reka-Luca Jani. Who will prevail?

WTA Bogota Day 2 Predictions

Katrina Scott vs Tatjana Maria

Head-to-head: first meeting

Maria begins her title defense against the relatively inexperienced Katrina Scott. The 35-year-old made history last season when she stormed to the title as a qualifier. She’s got her ranking in the top 70 and won’t need to go through the rigors of qualifying. Scott is a future star in the making. She has won three ITF titles already including the W25 Daytona Beach on clay. But playing Tatjana Maria is not the kind of matchup she will take comfort in. The experienced German will knife the slices en route to the second round.
Prediction: Maria in 2

Embed from Getty Images

Nadia Podoroska vs Sinja Kraus

Head-to-head: first meeting

Sinja Kraus is playing in her fourth tournament on Colombian soil. Her record in the previous three is not too shabby, with back-to-back final appearances in Anapoima and Mosquera, and winning the latter. So clearly, with all her experience and expertise on the surface, Podoroka won’t be taking her lightly.
Prediction: Podoroska in 3

Embed from Getty Images

Aliona Bolsova vs Sara Sorribes Tormo

Head-to-head: first meeting

Sara Sorribes Tormo is playing for the first time this season, with her whereabouts prior to this unknown. At the end of 2021, she took a break to heal from burnout. And when she returned in 2022, she featured heavily in the list of the longest WTA matches of the season – an astounding eight matches lasting three-plus hours. When you talk of endurance, Sorribes Tormo fits the bill, but it will only be pyrrhic in the long term if she cannot reassess her game. We are not sure what to expect of Sorribes Tormo here, and Aliona Bolsova loves the clay. Even though the lesser-ranked Bolsova hasn’t set the world alight with her results on the ITF circuit, she will look to pounce at Sorribes Tormo here who lacks match sharpness.
Prediction: Bolsova in 3

Main Photo Credit: Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

It’s Day 2 of the WTA Copa Colsanitas in Bogota.
