As always, we here at LWOT are here to share our thoughts on all the matches for you. We split the 32 matches between eight articles. Our other articles for Day 2 feature Naomi Osaka vs Danielle Collins, Venus Williams vs Alison Van Uytvanck, Sloane Stephens vs Greet Minnen, Petra Kvitova vs Erika Andreeva, Iga Swiatek vs Jasmine Paolini, Jessica Pegula vs Viktorija Golubic, and Emma Raducanu vs Alize Cornet. Predicting these matches are Tracey Essex, Damian Kust, and Fraser Learmonth. Who do you think will win?

US Open Day 2 Women’s Predictions

Taylor Townsend vs Katerina Siniakova

Tracey:
This should be a very interesting match featuring Townsend’s power against Siniakova’s craft. It’s hard to pick a winner in this matchup. Expect Siniakova to get a lot of balls back, but expect Townsend to find a way to end the points.
Prediction: Townsend in 3

Damian:
Taylor Townsend is back to picking up wins in WTA events, but mostly in qualifying or against weaker opposition so far. Despite her going out in the opening round in her last two events, Katerina Siniakova might be a step too far for now.
Prediction: Siniakova in 3

Fraser:
Townsend hasn’t been at a level good enough to do damage on the WTA Tour and it’s hard to see her making big waves in this tournament. Siniakova should win this behind consistency and solid play.
Prediction: Siniakova in 3

Embed from Getty Images

Lauren Davis vs Lucia Bronzetti

Tracey:
Lauren Davis certainly has drive, and she keeps playing no matter the odds. Bronzetti does well on the ITF circuit. This is a great opportunity for one of these ladies–most likely the Italian.
Prediction: Bronzetti in 3

Damian:
Lucia Bronzetti was just in the final of a 125K in Vancouver and she’s done amazing progress on hard courts this year. Lauren Davis has been so unimpressive recently that even the crowd support might not help her enough.
Prediction: Bronzetti in 3

Fraser:
Lauren Davis is a good defender and counterpuncher. However, she may be outgunned here and will need a few favours from Bronzetti to move on. The young Italian is hungry for more success this year and should pick up the win in this one.
Prediction: Bronzetti in 2

Embed from Getty Images

Sofia Kenin vs Jule Niemeier

Tracey:
With so many first round exits, it’s nearly impossible to imagine Kenin doing much at the US Open. She showed some It hasn’t been easy for Kenin to find wins of late, but her losses have been very competitive. Niemeier is definitely a rising star, on an upward trajectory. I’ll flip a coin on this one–and pick Niemeier in 3.
Prediction: Niemeier in 3

Damian:
Jule Niemeier has a big game, but she hasn’t pushed on after her Wimbledon run. Sofia Kenin finally had a decent week in Cleveland and is she plays at that level again, she should take this one.
Prediction: Kenin in 2

Fraser:
Kenin to win it all in New York? I’m only half joking too because the American showed signs of life last week and we know her best is enough to win Grand Slam titles. She should certainly move on here at the very least.
Prediction: Kenin in 2

Embed from Getty Images

Garbine Muguruza vs Clara Tauson

Tracey:
Clara Tauson should exact a toll on Muguruza, keeping her on the run and wrong footing her at opportune times. It probably won’t be enough to keep the Spaniard from moving on to the second round. But, it will be should be a difficult outing in which Muguruza will be pushed to a decider.
Prediction: Muguruza in 3

Damian:
There’s a lot of uncertainty regarding this one. Garbine Muguruza is having a very rough season with just a couple of WTA Tour quarterfinals, Clara Tauson just recently came back from an injury break. The Dane has the talent to win this one and she seems likelier to produce of these two.
Prediction: Tauson in 3

Fraser:
Tough draw for Muguruza as Tauson is a rising star in the game and a real talent on hard courts in particular. I expect the Spaniard to do well here though, so I’m backing her to edge this one.
Prediction: Muguruza in 2

Main Photo from Getty.

Tuesday is Day 2 at the US Open, and there are 32 women’s matches across the grounds at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center.
