Things have gone pretty much as expected so far, but surely there are some upsets waiting to pounce. As always, we here at LWOS make our predictions for every match. We split the day’s 16 new matches (there are also some holdovers from Monday) into four articles. In addition to this one, the other articles feature Hubert Hurkacz vs Emil Ruusuvuori, Matteo Berrettini vs Pablo Carreno Busta, and Fabio Fognini vs Holger Rune.

ATP Montreal Day 2 Predictions

Marin Cilic vs Borna Coric

Head-to-head: Cilic 7-0

Cilic has Coric’s number in the battle of the Croats. And the challenge will only be harder than before, as Coric is now trying to work his way back from injury. All seven of Cilic’s wins came before the injury, and all were on hard court. The big man is also playing well this year, although he’s taken almost two months off. However, he made two semis before that break, and he loves hard court, where he’s collected fifteen titles. Should be an eighth straight H2H win here.
Prediction: Cilic in 2

Embed from Getty Images

Dan Evans vs Filip Krajinovic

Head-to-head: Krajinovic 1-0

Overall, these two look pretty close, but Dan Evans has not been playing great recently, and Krajinovic has recently been in a final. They both like the hard courts and have the same win percentage, with the Serb owning the single H2H ( and another sub-ATP one). Evans’ game should pick back up now that he’s on hard, but at the moment Krajinovic looks better, and I have to favor him based on that.
Prediction: Krajinovic in 3

Embed from Getty Images

Benoit Paire vs Yoshihito Nishioka

Head-to-head: Paire 1-0

This is a good matchup for Nishioka to continue the momentum he has from Washington, where he made a fantastic run to the finals that saw him jump 45 places in the rankings. He came through legitimate competition, too, including Andrey Rublev, and deserved his place there. Benoit Paire doesn’t really win anymore, and Nishioka should be confident and motivated, and I’d expect to see the Japanese man in Round 2.
Prediction: Nishioka in 2

Embed from Getty Images

Nick Kyrgios vs Sebastian Baez

Head-to-head: Kyrgios 1-0

Nick Kyrgios is on fire right now, which is not a phrase any opponent wants to hear. He is coming off back-to-back finals appearances with one title, and is 13-3 on hard court for the year. Baez meanwhile is almost exclusively a clay court player, and is making just his thirteenth hard court start on the ATP tour. The only question would seem to be whether Kyrgios has the emotional stamina to make another run, or whether he feels like he needs a break and lets down his guard.
Prediction: Kyrgios in 2

Main Photo from Getty.

Round 1 continues at the ATP National Bank Open in Montreal and Day 2 features a good slate of matches.
