Both women have played some excellent tennis over the last fortnight at the All England Club and both will doubtless believe that they have what it takes to lift the trophy. But who will come out on top? As ever, we here at LWOT offer our predictions:

Wimbledon Final Predictions

Ons Jabeur vs Elena Rybakina

Jim: Elena Rybakina has exceeded expectations time and again at Wimbledon this year. Why shouldn’t she do so once again? Ons Jabeur is the higher-ranked player for a reason and is the favourite on paper, but the occasion appears to have gotten to her more than once at the Championships. Rybakina, in contrast, has made largely serene progress through the draw and her semifinal win over Simona Halep was exceptional. More of the same should see her win a maiden Grand Slam title.

Prediction: Rybakina in 3

Damian: Both finalists will be playing their first Grand Slam final, which usually leads to some nervy affairs (see Dominic Thiem vs Alexander Zverev at the US Open as an example). Handling pressure will be key and it seems like Rybakina has responded to it better over the course of this fortnight.

Her game is much simpler than Jabeur’s, but if she can serve well and keep executing the first-strike tennis as efficiently as she’s been thus far, the grass will only help her make full use of her assets. It’s not a done deal at all, but the Kazakh has had less weaker moments in the 2022 edition of Wimbledon.

Prediction: Rybakina in 3

Embed from Getty Images

Jack: Rybakina is not a flash in the pan. The Kazakh struggled during the worst periods of the pandemic and was never given the opportunity to maintain her momentum after her breakout at Dubai in 2020. She has shown what a force to be reckoned with she is, unflappable in her reputable wins over Halep, Zheng and Andreescu. Jabeur has absolutely earned her place in the final, but her opponents have been markedly weaker in quality.

Combine her possibly not being in full flow with the fact she can be prone to nerves in the biggest matches and Jabeur could actually be in real danger of losing this match. Junking and dropping the ball won’t work against Rybakina given how short the rallies are likely to be. Based on firepower, mental advantage and her opponents so far, I’m going to give the edge to Rybakina.

Prediction: Rybakina in 3

Jakub: For me, it has felt like Jabeur’s tournament in the very beginning. The Tunisian was in a tough position in the semifinals, ending the run of a lifetime for her close friend Tatjana Maria and the nerves showed a little bit in the second set as the errors piled up. Jabeur re-grouped and won the third set 6-1, showing just how dominant she can be. Rybakina has looked cool throughout her run, but the win over Halep was next level. The Romanian dismantled Paula Badosa and Amanda Anisimova, but Rybakina showed a different level.

The Kazakh barely reacted when she won her quarterfinal but cracked a smile once she beat Halep. It should be a lovely final, both players making history for their nations (Jabeur for her continent) and a great contrast of styles. They have played three times before, Rybakina retiring in their most recent meeting in Chicago last season while they split the first two matches. This feels like Jabeur’s time, but she will have to play her best to take the title.

Prediction: Jabeur in 3

Andy: The sweet striking Kazakh really showed up in the semifinal and that gives me cause for pause in assessing this match. Something about Jabeur concerns me. As much as she embraces the history she could make, I can’t help but feel that the weight of it could weigh on her. Of course, Rybakina is making history for her country too, but this seems to have been made light of.

The way she played today convinced me that she should show up on the big occasion as well. Jabeur has the better all round game but arguably has been able to get away with not playing at her peak given her draw to the final. Rybakina has pulled a quarterfinal out of the bag and then upped the gears in her semifinal. I like Rybakina to take this final, perhaps taking advantage of some nerves from the Tunisian.

Prediction: Rybakina in 2

Main photo:
Embed from Getty Images

In what promises to be an entertaining final, with history on the line for both, Ons Jabeur will take on Elena Rybakina for the Wimbledon crown.
