There were some upsets, with another Top 10 seed sent home <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/tennis\/2021\/08\/31\/maxime-cressy-upsets-pablo-carreno-busta-career-match\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">after Pablo Carreno Busta on Day 2<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>US Open Men&#8217;s Day 3 Recap<\/h2>\n<h4>On the plus side<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Daniil Medvedev<\/strong> is the favorite to reach the final from this half of the draw. He showed why with a dominant win over <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/tennis\/2019\/08\/31\/dominik-koepfers-unreal-journey-from-germany-to-the-us-open-via-tulane\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Dominik Koepfer<\/a>, dropping only seven games in the process. A third round matchup against Pablo Andujar should be equally straightforward for the World #2.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Carlos Alcaraz<\/strong> continued his <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/tennis\/2021\/09\/01\/even-off-clay-carlos-alcaraz-continues-to-amaze\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">excellent breakthrough season<\/a> with another Slam win, this time over Arthur Rinderknech. The Argentine is now favorite to reach at least the quarterfinals. While Anderson is currently nowhere near the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/tennis\/2018\/07\/19\/kevin-anderson-top-five\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">level that took him to the final<\/a> four years ago, it was still a very impressive display by the diminutive Argentine, whose excellent return game proved to be a nightmare for Anderson.<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/p>\n<h4>Who looked bad<\/h4>\n<p><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Casper Ruud <\/strong>disappointed at Slam level again, after doing so earlier this year at Roland Garros. The #8 seed reached the quarterfinals in Canada and Cincinnati and a very kind draw here, but he fell to world #117 and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/tennis\/2021\/09\/01\/qualifiers-huge-impact2021-us-open\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">qualifier Botic van de Zandschulp<\/a>. Despite this result and his general struggles outside clay, Ruud is still in a good position to make it to the World Tour Finals for the first time in his career.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cristian Garin\u00a0<\/strong>was also upset, by Henri Laaksonen.
