Predicting these matches today are Tracey Essex, Andrew Watson, and Yesh Ginsburg.

Wimbledon Day 2 Women’s Predictions

Kiki Bertens vs Marta Kostyuk

Yesh:
Kiki Bertens is struggling, but perhaps knowing that the end of her career is close will give her some added motivation. She’s more talented and more comfortable on the surface than Kotyuk, but her current level of play is lower. That should make for an exciting match, and either one can win.
Prediction: Bertens in 3

Tracey:
Bertens’ final year is not the high note she’d want to go out on. But, as she has said–the tank is quite empty. Kostyuk has been in good touch, and should soon reach the Top 50. This is a good match up for her maiden appearance at Wimbledon.
Prediction: Kostyuk in 2

Andrew:
We have barely seen Kiki Bertens in 2021 and I’m not predicting a change here. I’m sure that she would’ve been hoping for a much easier draw than Kostyuk who showed in Paris that she is a player on the up. The serve and shot making of the Ukrainian will be enough, especially if Bertens is still struggling for full fitness.
Prediction: Kostyuk in 2

Embed from Getty Images

Marketa Vondrousova vs Anett Kontaveit

Yesh:
Vondrousova hasn’t yet found the form that took her to the French Open final in 2019. Also, her game doesn’t transition to the grass that well. The Estonian should be far more comfortable in this match.
Prediction: Kontaveit in 3

Tracey:
Kontaveit has had a great grass court swing and comes into this match as the favorite. Vondrousova hasn’t had much success on this surface and it’s doubtful that she’ll make much headway against a confident Kontaveit.
Prediction: Kontaveit in 2

Andrew:
This one will come down to a battle of game styles. In my opinion it’s the Estonian whose game best fits the conditions because of her much superior grass court record and so I favour her in this matchup.
Prediction: Kontaveit in 2

Embed from Getty Images

Jil Teichmann vs Camila Giorgi

Yesh:
You never know what you’re going to get with Camila Giorgi. She has limitless potential but has never yet lived up to it. She’s been playing well recently, but her level can vary wildly from match to match. She should win, but you can never be confident about it.
Prediction: Giorgi in 2

Tracey:
Teichmann’s lack of grass court preparation puts her at a real disadvantage. Add to that her lack of any good results in Slams and her chances wane. She is playing at a top level despite her physical limitations. Unfortunately for her, Coco Gauff is a top player and should be able to hit her off the court.
Prediction: Gauff in 3

Tracey:
Gauff’s exceptional form and steady climb pretty much assures her of an easy win in this opener. It seems that the American teen continues to improve with each match. Consider her second round loss in Eastbourne an anomaly.
Prediction: Gauff in 2

Andrew:
This should be straightforward for Gauff.
