As always, we predict the matches for you. We have four of the matches in this article, and the other four in a second article.

WTA Istanbul Day 1 Predictions

Katerina Siniakova vs Cristina Busca

Busca is a 23-year-old Spaniard who is steadily improving and finding her place on Tour. She is likely shortly a future Top 100 player, and I expect her to make a few deep runs in bigger tournaments in the next few years. Right now, though, she isn’t quite there yet. Then again, Siniakova is not much better than a Spaniard, and she hasn’t been playing her best recently. I think Busca can pull this off.
Prediction: Busca in 3

Sara Errani vs Ana Konjuh

Errani is a former Top 5 player who is in the twilight of her career. She still has something to say, though, and isn’t a pushover in matches, especially on clay. Konjuh is still trying to make her way back from elbow surgery. This match will depend on Errani’s level, as she’s not so consistent anymore. Still, based on her level of play in Bogota, I think she can win this.
Prediction: Errani in 3

Embed from Getty Images

Daria Kasatkina vs Tereza Mrdeza

There’s not much to say about this match. Mrdeza is not a Tour-level player, and Kasatkina is, at absolute worst, a Top 30-level player right now. This should be an easy one.
Prediction: Kasatkina in 2

Embed from Getty Images

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova vs Anastasija Potapova

Two weeks ago, Potapova met fellow Anastajia and lost to Sevastova in straight sets in Charleston. For the second consecutive match, the young Russian will face an opponent who shares a first name with her (though not the spelling). Pavlyuchenkova, though, has not played in over a month and hasn’t competed on clay yet this year. Also, she has not played so well this year. I expect her to fall to her compatriot.
Prediction: Potapova in 2

Main Photo from Getty.

Day 1 of the WTA TEB BNP Paribas Tennis Championships in Istanbul, Turkey, features eight first-round matches.
