Her form has fallen off severely since her rapid rise seven years ago, and she’s working her way up again. This result will be a good development for the Japanese former World #32, but she just isn’t playing well enough right now to keep up with Kudermetova.
Prediction: Kudermetova in 2

Embed from Getty Images

Danka Kovinic vs Petra Kvitova

No disrespect at all to Kovinic here. The Montenegrin is a former Top 50 player and looks solid here. Unfortunately for her, that’s nowhere near good enough to hang with Petra Kvitova. The two-time Wimbledon champion is still one of the best players in the game, and she’s currently playing well. She got a little lucky in facing an Elena Rybakina who wasn’t at 100% (though McNally played really well), and then battled her way past Anastasija Sevastova in the second round. Badosa has been playing fine tennis herself, and she’s probably playing better than McNally at the moment, but she’s looked vulnerable and McNally looks in full form to take advantage.
Prediction: McNally in 3

Embed from Getty Images

Sloane Stephens vs Ajla Tomljanovic

I’ll repeat what I said about Stephens on Day 2: if she plays well, she can beat anyone in the world. She’s just difficult to predict because she hasn’t often been playing well recently–for a few years now. Luckily for fans of the American, though, she has looked great so far this week. It’s always tough to expect her form to continue, but if she keeps this level up, she’ll win this match easily.
Prediction: Stephens in 2

Main Photo from Getty.

On Day 4 at the WTA Volvo Car Open in Charleston, sixteen women will compete for the quarterfinal spots.
