But who will advance?

ATP Marseille Open Day Three Predictions

Round of 32

Egor Gerasimov vs Yannick Hanfmann

Head-to-head: first meeting

The in-form Egor Gerasimov promises to be a dangerous floater in the draw at the ATP Marseille Open, although Yannick Hanfmann can also offer a real threat if he gets going in Provence. Gerasimov played a great tournament in Montpellier, reaching the semifinals where he took eventual champion David Goffin the distance, and he should find conditions in Marseille to be to his liking as well. Hanfmann, in contrast, doesn’t bring any real momentum into this match and it’ll be a struggle for him to suddenly find it against an aggressive player like Gerasimov.

Prediction: Gerasimov in 3
Embed from Getty Images

Round of 16

Hugo Gaston vs Jannik Sinner

Head-to-head: first meeting

This match should be a fun watch. Hugo Gaston had to fight hard in his first-round match, but dug in to get the better of the experienced Dennis Novak. The Frenchman, who made his name with a thrilling run to the fourth round at Roland Garros last season, will know he’ll need to be at his creative best to get past the hard-hitting Jannik Sinner.

The Italian was not at his best in the first round and was staring defeat in the face against Gregoire Barrere, only to manage to stage an impressive comeback to complete a 7-6 6-7 7-5 win. Gaston will surely look to use a lot of dropshots to unsettle Sinner and prevent him dictating from the baseline, but the Italian is a good mover and, if he can limit his errors, should progress without too many problems.

Prediction: Sinner in 2
Embed from Getty Images

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga vs Ugo Humbert

Head-to-head: Tsonga 1-0 Humbert

In an entertaining first-round clash, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga won a battle of the veterans by edging out Feliciano Lopez 7-5 in the third. However, the Frenchman is not the athlete he once was and, after such a long and tiring battle in the first round, there are real question marks over how well he will be able to recover.

That is concerning, because he will likely need to be at his best if he is to find a way through his countryman, Ugo Humbert. The fourth seed has not started the season in the manner he would have liked, but he is ranked 31st in the world for a reason and it will surely not be long before the wins start to come. Expect him to take the first step on the road to recovery here at Tsonga’s expense.

Prediction: Humbert in 3

Main photo:
Embed from Getty Images

Day three at the ATP Marseille Open should feature plenty of good tennis, with six matches, including both first and second round action, on the schedule in Provence.
