Giving their picks for this set of matches are Jim Smith and Damian Kust. But who will book their place in the second round?

French Open Day Three Women’s Predictions

Mayar Sherif vs Karolina Pliskova

Jim: After she was forced to retire hurt from the final at the Italian Open, it’s not clear to what extent Karolina Pliskova has recovered. And she has been handed a tough first-round assignment up against Mayar Sherif, with the Egyptian impressing in coming through the qualifying in Paris. But if Pliskova’s body holds up its end of the bargain, she should have enough in her game to account for the qualifier.

Prediction: Pliskova in 3

Damian: The Egyptian played some excellent tennis to come through the qualifying, with this match not likely to be as straightforward for Pliskova as it looks on paper. But provided she has recovered from the injury she picked up in Rome, her power should see her through.

Prediction: Pliskova in 3
Embed from Getty Images

Ludmilla Samsonova vs Sofia Kenin

Jim: Sofia Kenin has looked lost in recent weeks. Her conviction in her game is typically one of her greatest strengths, but it appears to have deserted her entirely and the results have been disastrous. In her last match, she failed to even take a game off Victoria Azarenka. But, fortunately for the American, Ludmilla Samsonova is no Azarenka and this should be a more manageable assignment for the Australian Open champion.

Prediction: Kenin in 3

Damian: Kenin’s only match on clay since the US Open saw her lose to Azarenka without troubling the scoreboard, which casts doubt on her chances here. But she should still be expected to make it through to at least the second round in Paris, having had time to put that humiliating loss behind her and acclimatise to the conditions.

Prediction: Kenin in 3
Embed from Getty Images

Alison Van Uytvanck vs Rebecca Peterson

Jim: Rebecca Peterson is another player in no kind of form at all, with the Swede having lost all but one of the matches she has played since the season resumed. And that sole victory came via retirement after only five games. She has, it should be noted, faced some tough draws during this miserable run, but there has been little in any of her performances to suggest that she is on the cusp of turning it around.

Prediction: Van Uytvanck in 3

Damian: Neither player has been in good form recently, not getting many wins after the restart. But one suspects that the stresses of the quarantine she was put under after Benoit Paire’s positive test had a role to play in that defeat. Back in the familiar conditions in Paris, expect Mladenovic to be back to something more like her best. And that should be enough to take her past the out-of-form Laura Siegemund.

Prediction: Mladenovic in 2

Damian: Mladenovic hasn’t played since her shocking collapse against Gracheva at the US Open, which was only the latest of her mental fadeaways in recent times. To add to her possible woes, Siegemund is never easy to face on the clay thanks to her guile and court-craft. Expect the German to reach the second round at the French Open.

Prediction: Siegemund in 2

Main photo:
Embed from Getty Images

Day three at the French Open will see the final matches of the first round played.
