In an <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/naomiosaka\/status\/1298785716487548928\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">official statement<\/a> posted on her Twitter account, Osaka outlined the reasons for her strike.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/EgY2uXZWAAECxuP?format=jpg&amp;name=large\" alt=\"Image\" width=\"367\" height=\"489\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As one of the leading stars of the WTA Tour, and one of tennis few black players, Osaka&#8217;s decision is sure to send shockwaves through the world of tennis and sport as a whole. Osaka <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/2020\/08\/26\/bucks-boycott-nba-playoff-game\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">joins<\/a> NBA basketball, the WNBA, MLS Soccer, and Major League Baseball with her strike action, and further strike actions\/boycotts could follow in the ensuing days. A few hours after Osaka&#8217;s announcement the ATP and WTA Tour, the USTA, and the Western and Southern Open <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordontennis.com\/2020\/08\/26\/western-and-southern-open-postpones-thursdays-matches-in-racial-justice-protest\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">released a statement <\/a>stating that all of Thursday&#8217;s scheduled matches will be postponed until Friday in solidarity with the racial justice protest actions.<\/p>\n<p>The 22 year old Osaka has been a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/sports\/2020\/06\/11\/tennis\/naomi-osaka-black-lives-matter\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vocal supporter<\/a> of the global Black Lives Matter movement, and has frequently used her platform on social media and elsewhere to bring awareness to issues of racial and social justice, especially since the death of Black American George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police earlier this Summer.\u00a0 Osaka <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com\/pro-game\/2020\/05\/coco-gauff-naomi-osaka-george-floyd-protests-minnesota\/89001\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">attended protests<\/a> in Minneapolis calling for justice for George Floyd. A number of other tennis professionals have also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurosport.com\/tennis\/mouratoglou-on-coco-gauff-and-serena-williams-s-black-lives-matter-stands-i-m-so-proud-of-them_sto7778447\/story.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">spoken out<\/a> in support of the movement including Serena Williams, <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2020\/06\/24\/andy-murray-black-lives-matter-tennis-12896988\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andy Murray<\/a>, and Coco Gauff.<\/p>\n<p>After winning his quarterfinal match, Canadian Milos Raonic <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BenRothenberg\/status\/1298805999759958017\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">expressed support<\/a> for Osaka&#8217;s strike action, and there are reports that the semifinals may not take place tomorrow due to the protest.<\/p>\n<p>There are sure to be more reactions from the world of tennis and sport in the coming hours and days after Osaka&#8217;s strike action.
