First, it is usually the day when both the men\u2019s and women\u2019s singles\u00a0enter the fourth round (in the case of <strong>Roland Garros<\/strong>, which has such a prolonged start, there will be third round games in <strong>Paris<\/strong> on Saturday) and consequently there are usually a plethora of attractive matches. Secondly, it\u2019s usually the first day of a Slam that most tennis fans have a chance to stop working and start watching, on TV or live, for hours on end.<\/p>\n<p>The 2017 middle Saturday in Paris\u00a0promises to be a particular treat, with a trio of big men\u2019s matches to look forward to. Here\u2019s a preview of the \u201cbig three\u201d matches this weekend.<\/p>\n<h3>Andy Murray v Juan Martin del Potro<\/h3>\n<div class=\"getty embed image\" style=\"background-color: #fff; display: inline-block; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue',Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif; color: #a7a7a7; font-size: 11px; width: 100%; max-width: 594px;\">\n<div style=\"padding: 0; margin: 0; text-align: left;\"><a style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.co.uk\/detail\/589520688\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"overflow: hidden; position: relative; height: 0; padding: 66.666667% 0 0 0; width: 100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"display: inline-block; position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; margin: 0;\" src=\"\/\/embed.gettyimages.com\/embed\/589520688?et=9ZK-ipuXQtdXY1pVjpxcAQ&amp;tld=co.uk&amp;viewMoreLink=off&amp;sig=FhauBp4lfmH1tStxp2bAlBf4DSjczR37BeNesO-59C8=&amp;caption=true\" width=\"594\" height=\"396\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin: 0;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>Their meeting at Roland Garros will be their third encounter in the last 10 months or so, following their <strong>Olympic<\/strong> singles final in<strong> Rio<\/strong>, which <strong>Andy Murray<\/strong> won in four sets, and their epic five-set encounter in the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/tennis\/2016\/09\/15\/murray-del-potro-meet-davis-cup-blockbuster\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><strong> Davis Cup<\/strong> semi-final<\/a> in Glasgow last autumn, which <strong>Juan Martin del Potro<\/strong> won en route to guiding Argentina to their first ever Davis Cup victory.<\/p>\n<p>Murray has been one of the least convincing World No.1s in recent memory, having endured a wretched first half of 2017 as a result of illness (a debilitating bout of shingles), injury (an elbow problem) and, by his own admission, a problem with remotivating himself in the wake of reaching the No. 1 position. More importantly, he is a great player, who would surely have won more than his one Slam (the <strong>US Open<\/strong> in 2009) if he had not experienced his own <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/tennis\/2017\/03\/24\/the-five-finest-comebacks-from-injury-in-tennis-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">appalling run of injuries<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On the clay of Paris, on which the two have never met, it will be close \u2013 perhaps even as agonisingly close as their Davis Cup classic. As opposed to faster grass or hard court surfaces, clay\u00a0gives him that little bit more time to wind up and unleash his awesome forehand. However, he has not proven that love of \u201cle terre battue\u201d until this year, which is the first time that he has reached the third round in Paris.<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, <strong>Kevin Anderson<\/strong> has a game built for grass, with his enormous serve, powerful ground strokes and (at 6 foot 8) his sheer physical presence. However, such has been both players\u2019 relative fall from grace in recent years that they are only meeting in the third round.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, it promises to be a superb, stylish and utterly Gallic match-up, with both men possessing a wonderful repertoire of strokes. In particular, Gasquet\u2019s single-handed back-hand remains a thing of beauty and a joy forever, even if it never takes him to the Slam that he and his country crave. But Monfils may just have the better all-court game, especially on clay.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever the result of this match, it is hard not to think that tennis in general and the French Open in particular has already seen the best of these two players. Like so many other talented men in this period of the game\u2019s history, Monfils and Gasquet have had the misfortune to play in the finest era of men\u2019s tennis ever, when a single Major has probably been worth two or three in other eras. However, it is undeniable that the French have a new, younger hero to root for, <strong>Lucas Pouille<\/strong>, who may lack the lavish ability of Monfils and Gasquet but might just possess the mental fortitude that they have so demonstrably lacked.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prediction: <\/strong>Monfils in five sets.<\/p>\n<p>Enjoy what you read?
