At Indian Wells in 2018, their most recent meeting, they played three tight sets with Sasnovich narrowly losing the third and only claiming the match by keeping her nerve in two tiebreaks. The biggest difference between the two heading into this match is that Linette had to play through qualifiers to reach the round of 16 making today’s match her fifth in five days. Linette would need every advantage to defeat Sasnovich and the fatigue of her previous matches – though all were straight sets – will be a hinderance.

Sasnovich in 2.

Embed from Getty Images

Wang Qiang vs Fiona Ferro

Wang Qiang and Fiona Ferro’s previous matches have all come in the last year. Both of Wang’s victories were relatively comfortable while Ferro’s was a monumental, come-from-behind struggle. Ferro’s record at the New York Open so far is impressive. Other than a three set battle against Elizabeth Mandlik in the final round of qualifying she has won comfortably in straight sets. Buzarnescu claimed an easy 6-2, 6-1 victory then and is likely to find little trouble dispatching Blinkova in New York. Blinkova has played well and her commanding defeat of Coco Vandeweghe would usually count for more, but Vandeweghe is returning from injury and appeared well short of her best on Monday. The extra day of rest will have been a blessing for Blinkova who had to struggle through qualifying and is in the main draw of New York as a lucky loser but Buzarnescu will likely be too strong to overcome.

Buzarnescu in 2.

Embed from Getty Images

Karolina Muchova vs Kristie Ahn

Karolina Muchova and Kristie Ahn have never met on the WTA tour. Ahn, an American wildcard, will have the advantage of playing on home turf. She is a four years older than Muchova and has never been inside the top 100.
