In action is top-seed Ashleigh Barty and making her comeback from injury, Bianca Andreescu. We’ve got nearly all of the matches on Day 2 predicted for you. The World #1 always stymied her opponents with tons of backhand slice shots, drawing their errors. While Barty will always have the knifing slice shot, she now tends to control the court with punishing pace, lofting balls and surprising net play. It’s an all-around game.

Sofia Kenin has come off a win over the crafty Taiwanese player Hsieh Su-Wei. Power players seem to get frustrated by Hsieh and go for too much. Yet, Kenin kept her own tempo despite Hsieh’s rhythm interrupting style.

I’d like Kenin’s changes against anyone other than Ashleigh Barty. While Kenin has some big weapons, I don’t think she’s got enough to bounce the Aussie in her opener. It would be a startling upset as Barty hasn’t lost an opening round since Rome 2018.
Prediction: Barty in 2

Embed from Getty Images

Danielle Collins vs Katerina Siniakova

Head to head: First meeting

Danielle Collins just came off a dismal result at the Silicon Valley Classic. Perhaps she’s feeling a bit better about the loss, as her conqueror Zheng Saisai ultimately won the title – and defeated four seeded players en route to her maiden title. Still, it was a disappointing 2-6 0-6 loss and undoubtedly a learning opportunity for the feisty American.

Katerina Siniakova is always capable of an upset. But is a hard court tournament the surface on which she can pull that off? I doubt it up against the hard-hitting American. Her success in Toronto will come in doubles after a first round exit in the singles draw.
Prediction: Collins in 2

Embed from Getty Images

Francesca Di Lorenzo vs Kiki Bertens

Head to head: Di Lorenzo 0-1 Bertens

Francesca Di Lorenzo’s win over Petra Martic may be considered an upset. But, the Ohio State alum brought the fight to Croat. Martic had no answer for Di Lorenzo’s first strike tennis. In her third match in Toronto, Di Lorenzo showed no signs of letting up. It’s a great all-around game that will hopefully lead this Buckeye to a US Open wild card slot. One more win should secure it.

Kiki Bertens commanded in their only meeting, 6-2 6-1, at the 2018 US Open. Though today, Di Lorenzo hardly looked like the same player. Bertens hasn’t lost an opening round since 2018, losing to Maria Sakkari in the Rome opener. Bertens earned two 2019 titles, for a total of 9 career titles. While Di Lorenzo may find opportunities to push her, the current World #5 and 13th seed will claim the win.
Prediction: Bertens in 3

Embed from Getty Images

Eugenie Bouchard vs Bianca Andreescu

Head to head: Bouchard 0-1 Andreescu

Two Canadians who’ve made their names well-known world-wide but for very different reasons.
