We breakdown the four quarterfinal matches, which include a trio of the wWrld’s Top 10 players.

ATP Hamburg Quarterfinal Predictions

Dominic Thiem vs Andrey Rublev

Head-to-Head: Thiem 2-0 Rublev

The top seed and World No.4 Dominic Thiem will once again start as the overwhelming favorite in his quarterfinal match against the resurgent Russian Andrey Rublev. The dynamic Austrian continued his quest for a first German Open title with a dominant straight sets win over Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics, dropping just two points on his first serve. Thiem is competing in Hamburg for the third consecutive year. He is bidding to advance past the quarterfinals for the first time after losing to Nicolas Jarry at the same stage last year.

The 25-year-old is aiming to extend his 2-0 head-to-head record against Rublev. Thiem narrowly escaped the clutches of the young Russian in their last meeting in Monte Carlo. Rublev squandered a match point in that encounter in the Principality last year, but he will come into this match buoyed by his recent renaissance and new-found form. This is a second quarterfinal showing of the year for the 21-year-old (quarterfinalist in Marseille as well).

Rublev clearly has the game to trouble Thiem, especially when you take into account their tussle in Monte Carlo last year. The Russian’s power will give the top seed plenty to ponder, but I expect Thiem to produce another solid win here.
Prediction: Thiem in 2

Embed from Getty Images

Jeremy Chardy vs Nikoloz Basilashvili

Head-to-Head: Chardy 1-0 Basilashvili

Jeremy Chardy maintained his good form as he beat Richard Gasquet in an all-French affair to reach his second successive quarterfinal. His run to the last eight in Bastad last week included a fine win in the second round against Chile’s fast-rising star Cristian Garin. Chardy managed to subdue an in-form Benoit Paire – another player at home on clay this season – in the opening round in Hamburg. He will next play the defending champion Nikoloz Basilashvili, who improved his overall record at this event to 7-1 withhis three-set victory over Juan Ignacio Londero. As good as Chardy has looked during the past couple of weeks, I think Georgian will outmuscle him in this match-up.
Prediction: Basilashvili in 2

Embed from Getty Images

Alexander Zverev vs Filip Krajinovic

Head-to-Head: First meeting

Alexander Zverev reached his eighth quarterfinal of the season after overcoming 2013 Hamburg finalist Federico Delbonis in two tough sets. It’s his 25th match win 2019. The German has stuttered through a very disappointing opening half of the season, which yielded just one title at the ATP 250 in Geneva. After setting the bar so high in 2018 by winning four titles, including the prestigious season-ending ATP Finals and climbing to world no.3, Zverev’s contrasting form and results this year have caught many by surprise. However, he managed to snap his three-match losing streak at this tournament by ousting Swedish Open champion Nicolas Jarry at the first hurdle. Zverev will now try to emulate his exploits from 2014, when he reached the semifinals here as a teenager.

The World No.5 will play the inconsistent Serbian Filip Krajinovic, who bulldozed his way past 2016 champion Martin Klizan in three sets. Krajinovic had won a lot in the last couple of months before Wimbledon, although granted much has come at Challenger level. However, he will need a complete performance to beat Zverev–who seems to have found his footing this week–which I doubt he will.
Prediction: Zverev in 2

Embed from Getty Images

Fabio Fognini vs Pablo Carreno Busta

Head-to-Head: Fognini 0-6 Carreno Busta

I was utterly astonished at the sight of the head-to-head record between these two players, and funnily enough it could still go Carreno Busta’s way yet again in their quarterfinal meeting. Historically, Fognini does well during the brief post-Wimbledon summer clay season across Europe.

The Italian has won four of his nine career ATP titles at this stage of the season, including the Hamburg crown in 2013. However, the World No.10’s summer clay swing did not get off to a great start as he was forced to retire in Umag last week. But he has bounced back impressively in Hamburg and if he plays anywhere close to the level he displayed against Molleker, he should beat Carreno Busta–a player who has struggled immensely this year–quite comfortably.
Prediction: Fognini in 2

Main Photo from Getty

The quarterfinals at the German Open in Hamburg are all set, and fittingly all the pre-tournament favorites are still in the running to lift the title.
