It was also a day rich in close, tightly contested matches, including some long 5-sets.

French Open Day 4 Recap

Who looked good:

David Goffin won easily again, dominating from beginning to end. It is highly likely his tournament will be over in a couple of days since his next opponent is none other than Rafael Nadal, but it’s still encouraging for the Belgian to be playing well after a very rough year so far.

Stan Wawrinka made easy work of a potentially tricky match against Christian Garin, losing only five games and displaying some impressive form, hitting winners off both wings at will. The 2015 champion hasn’t gone deep in a Slam ever since he reached the final here in Paris back in 2017, but it’s looking like this might the tournament where he finally makes some waves again.

Pablo Carreno Busta won easily yet again and is into Round 3 having only lost 11 games so far, after not winning a single match since the Australian Open. He’s looking his old top 10 self and has to fancy his chances of reaching the quarterfinals at this point.

Grigor Dimitrov has played 10 sets to reach the 3rd round of this tournament, but it was a richly deserved win as he fought back from 1-2 down in sets to beat Marin Cilic with some inspired tennis.

Corentin Moutet showed some brave, attacking tennis to upset Guido Pella and reach the third round of a Slam for the first time in his young career. With Londero waiting for him in the next round, a 4th round appearance is certainly possible.

Who looked bad:

Richard Gasquet was upset by Londero in 4 sets. The result isn’t exactly a massive shock, especially with the Frenchman struggling with injury for most of the year, but it’s still not a sign for him going forward as he tries to climb back the rankings.

Philipp Kohlschreiber looked like he had a good draw to make a run here, but he got unceremoniously dumped out by Nicolas Mahut in three 6-3 sets. Credit to the veteran Frenchman of course, who continues his completely unexpected fairytale run in Paris.

Match of the day:</h4

There are several candidates for this award today; the most obvious one would be the 11-9 5th set match between Paire and Herbert, with Paire serving for the match in both the 3rd and 4th sets but needing to go the full distance to win it. The 5-set tussle between Dimitrov and Cilic would also be a worthy selection here, but ultimately it goes to the rematch of the 2015 quarterfinal between Jo Wilfried Tsonga and Kei Nishikori; the Japanese expectedly won this time, but not without Tsonga putting up a very good fight and almost taking it to a 5th set. The quality was sensational at times with Tsonga showing he might still have some elite tennis left in him.

Day 4 of the men’s tournament at Roland Garros saw the bottom half of the draw play out the second round, with all of the main favorites advancing including the likes of Federer and Nadal.
