Could we get an all-Canadian final? Can either Felix Auger-Aliassime or Denis Shapovalov pull off the upset? Don’t count either of those two out.

ATP Miami Open Semifinals Predictions

John Isner vs Felix Auger-Aliassime

Isner started out this tournament a little slowly, but he is nearly impossible to break here in Miami. The tall American has been able to lift his game whenever needed this tournament–especially in tiebreaks.

Don’t underestimate Auger-Aliassime. The young Canadian has an incredible skill set, and he always seems to be able to find another gear when he needs it. This teenager has the best all-around game that we’ve seen in anyone this young since Roger Federer. You can quote me on that. Assuming his health issues don’t cause further problems, this young man is a future many-time Grand Slam champion.
Embed from Getty Images
What does that say about this coming match, though? Isner is just too good in Miami. He wants to defend his title, and he can force a match to come down to just a few points in a tiebreak. The American will win this one, but don’t expect to see the Canadian lose too many more Masters semifinals in the future.
Prediction: Isner in 2

Embed from Getty Images

Denis Shapovalov vs Roger Federer

Shapovalov is another young Canadian future star. He reached his best before Auger-Aliassime did, with a huge run at the Canada Masters two years ago. He doesn’t have the same upside as his younger compatriot, either.
Embed from Getty Images
As Federer gets a little older and Shapovalov gets a little better, the Canadian may soon be the favorite in this matchup. For right now, though, Federer is the much better player. The Swiss legend has played great tennis this tournament, easing his way through earlier opponents then blasting his later-round challengers off the court. We are seeing the Federer of old in Miami, and it’s quite refreshing to see.

At 37 years of age, Federer is not quite as consistent as he once was. He’s still one of the best in the world when he’s on, though, and he’s been on this week. We can’t assume that he’ll stay at this level (we could assume that when he was younger), but we definitely can’t assume that he’ll drop off, either. That would be foolish.
Prediction: Federer in 2

There are only two rounds left in the Miami Masters, and there are still two Canadians left in the draw.
