The North American hard court swing has arrived, but some WTA players are delaying their start to it as five withdrawals have hit D.C., the only combined 500 on the calendar and one of the most prominent, and five players have withdrawn from the 250 in Memphis.<\/span><\/p>\n

Which Players Have Withdrawn from D.C.?<\/h4>\n

The highest-ranked player to withdraw is Marta Kostyuk, coming off a Wimbledon<\/a> semifinal run that ended an all-around excellent natural surface season. Kostyuk is up to a career-high ranking of No. 11 in the world and is on the precipice of her top-10 debut. With such strong results in the first half of the season, it\u2019s not a surprise to see Kostyuk prioritizing bigger tournaments right now.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A less-expected withdrawal came from Jasmine Paolini, who seemed to turn things around with a <\/span>Wimbledon quarterfinal run<\/span><\/a>. But the foot injury that has plagued her all season is still holding her back, as it has forced her to withdraw from D.C. and Toronto as well, as she announced in an Instagram story.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Iva Jovic has withdrawn as well, her third withdrawal in her last four tournaments. Katerina Siniakova has also withdrawn and has not played following a disappointing Wimbledon in both singles and doubles. Rounding out the withdrawals is Jaqueline Cristian, who has been dealing with a knee injury for three weeks now.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Who Replaced Those Players in the Main Draw?<\/h4>\n

Jessica Pegula, who was originally entered as a late wild card, ended up taking Paolini\u2019s place in the main draw. Pegula will be the top seed, a product of the strong season she\u2019s been having as she\u2019s ranked No. 3 in the rankings and No. 6 in the year-end race. Pegula\u2019s direct entry freed up a wild card for Ashlyn Krueger, who just made the fourth round of Wimbledon as a qualifier.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Polish duo of Magdalena Frech and Magda Linette replaced Jovic and Siniakova, respectively. Frech and Linette have had similar seasons, with both currently on a three-match losing streak and hovering around the top 50 in the year-to-date race. Linette faces a tough challenge in the first round, though, as she\u2019ll face defending champion and seventh seed Leylah Fernandez.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Taking Kostyuk\u2019s place is Elisabetta Cocciaretto, who hasn\u2019t won a match since her 6-1 6-0 loss to <\/span>Iga Swiatek in Rome<\/span><\/a>. Cocciaretto has fallen outside the top 70 of the WTA rankings, though she is much higher in the race. Still, she needs to pick up points and this could be the perfect opportunity to do it.<\/span><\/p>\n

The final alternate is the newly wed Katie Boulter, who will be cutting the honeymoon phase short to take Cristian\u2019s spot in the main draw. Despite a poor showing at Wimbledon, Boulter is on the rise after finishing last season outside the top 100.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Which Players Have Withdrawn from Memphis<\/a>?<\/h4>\n

The withdrawals in Memphis are less high-profile than D.C. but still have the same amount. The highest-ranked players to withdraw are Petra Marcinko and Antonia Ruzic, both of whom are ranked just outside the top 50. Ruzic has struggled to string wins together since her quarterfinal run in Dubai, while Marcinko is a few months removed from a 250 title.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Alycia Parks, who spent the two weeks after Wimbledon playing tournaments in Europe, has also withdrawn. Panna Udvardy, another withdrawal, also played the last two weeks, losing to Paula Badosa in both tournaments.<\/span><\/p>\n

The final withdrawal from Memphis is Dayana Yastremska, who hasn\u2019t played since Wimbledon and is in danger of falling out of the Top 100. Yastremska does have a WTA 125 title on the year, but not much success outside of that.<\/span><\/p>\n

Who Replaced Those Players in the Main Draw?<\/h4>\n

Tatjana Maria, coming off a successful grass season as usual, replaced Marcinko in the main draw. Maria isn\u2019t as effective an opponent on hard courts, but can still use her skills and experience to her advantage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Taking Parks\u2019 place is Marina Bassols Ribera, a player who has had plenty of success at the Challenger level this season. This will be Bassols Ribera\u2019s third main-draw appearance at a Tour-level event this season, one of which being Roland Garros where she was a qualifier. The opportunity to play in a main draw without going through qualifying will be massive for her. Elvina Kalieva, replacing Udvardy, is in a similar situation, as she has played in four WTA Tour main draws this season, all of which she reached through qualifying. This will be her fifth, and her first as a direct entrant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Katie Volynets, fresh off the Newport final, will take Ruzic\u2019s place, and Linda Fruhvirtova will replace Yastremska.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
