That made him the third-youngest Umag champion this decade (behind Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner). It’s never easy backing a title run, but he has shown good composure and consistency in his young career, and Taro Daniel is not a clay specialist who is going to make this extremely physical. I am going with the Spaniard to continue his win streak.

Prediction: Merida in 3

Damir Dzumhur vs Hugo Gaston

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="6dfbdbe8ed6ff2eb8f8e8ee3c2cef8f4" image-id="wennjHciD3fM" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3000px; aspect-ratio: 3000/2000;" ></smartframe-embed>

Head-to-Head: Dzumhur 1-0 Gaston

Damir Dzumhur had a fantastic week in Umag, reaching a tour-level final for the first time since 2018. He came just short against Daniel Merida and will be looking to make another deep run in the last tour-level event of the season on clay. Hugo Gaston lost early in Bastad and is having a terrible season. He has won just one tour-level match, but he will be much fresher heading into this match and should win if he can take advantage.

Prediction: Gaston in 3

Botic van de Zandschulp vs Jaime Faria

Head-to-Head: first meeting

Jaime Faria has played some solid tennis on clay this season. He made the third round of the French Open, where he pushed Frances Tiafoe to five sets and took a set off Casper Ruud last week in Gstaad. Playing on his home soil should give him even more confidence to play his best tennis, and if he does that, Botic van de Zandschulp will be in trouble. The Dutch player is higher ranked and has the experience factor, but this is not his preferred surface.

Prediction: Faria in 3

Nuno Borges vs Orlando Luz

Head-to-Head: first meeting

It has been a rather underwhelming season for Nuno Borges so far, but he has gained some momentum since the start of the French Open and will be looking to peak this week. He is Portugal’s best player, and winning the home tournament would be his goal. His first-round opponent, Orlando Luz, is ranked outside the top 1000 and has already surpassed expectations by qualifying to the main draw. I expect a straightforward win for Borges in this one.

Prediction: Borges in 2

Main Photo Credit: Susan Mullane-Imagn Images

Eight first-round matches are scheduled on Day 2 of the Millennium ATP Estoril Open, and this article features Portuguese No.1 Nuno Borges, who will face Brazilian qualifier Orlando Luz.
