It should be an entertaining third day at WTA Iasi and, as always, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for every match on the slate. But who will advance in Romania?

WTA Iasi Day 3 Predictions

Yulia Putintseva vs Alina Charaeva

Head-to-head: first meeting

Yulia Putintseva has endured an inconsistent season, but clay remains the surface where her defensive skills and competitive spirit are most effective. She has shown flashes of her best tennis over the past few months, using her speed and ability to absorb pace to frustrate opponents. While her grass-court campaign did not produce a deep run, returning to clay should suit her game much better.

Alina Charaeva has spent most of the year competing on the ITF Circuit, where she has put together some encouraging results on clay. She is comfortable constructing points patiently and can produce plenty of topspin from the baseline. However, this represents a significant step up in opposition, and dealing with Putintseva’s variety and experience over two or three sets is a difficult challenge.

Prediction: Putintseva in 2

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOB7YCjJeS2" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 5166px; aspect-ratio: 5166/3444;" ></smartframe-embed>

Anna Bondar vs Tamara Zidansek

Head-to-head: Bondar 2-0 Zidansek

This has all the ingredients of a classic clay-court battle. Anna Bondar has enjoyed another solid season on the surface, picking up valuable wins and continuing to rely on her heavy groundstrokes to dictate play. Although she could not carry that form onto grass, she is back on her preferred surface and should feel comfortable in the slower conditions.

Tamara Zidansek has looked much closer to her best in recent months after a difficult spell with injuries and inconsistent results. The Slovenian is an excellent mover on clay and is capable of extending rallies until openings appear. She has also enjoyed success in Iasi before, which should give her confidence coming into this encounter.

Zidansek’s creative shot-making and variety can open up the court, but recent results have been more mixed as she works her way back. Bondar’s current momentum and ability to stay steady in rallies make this a tough ask for Zidansek.

Prediction: Bondar in 2

Clara Burel vs Elsa Jacquemot

Head-to-head: Burel 4-0 Jacquemot

This all-French matchup promises plenty of long baseline exchanges. Clara Burel has experienced an up-and-down campaign, but she remains capable of producing high-quality tennis when she finds her rhythm. While grass did not bring her many positive results, her ability to redirect pace and change the direction of rallies makes her a dangerous opponent on clay.

Elsa Jacquemot has steadily built confidence throughout the season and continues to improve with every passing month. She is comfortable on clay, moves well, and rarely gives away cheap points. Those qualities have helped her collect several solid wins leading into WTA Iasi.

Despite Jacquemot’s progress, Burel’s greater experience at WTA level and previous success in this matchup could prove decisive. If she serves well and takes control of rallies early, she should be able to maintain her unbeaten record against her compatriot.

Prediction: Burel in 2

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBpls2tAjH" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3000px; aspect-ratio: 3000/2000;" ></smartframe-embed>

Elina Avanesyan vs Petra Marcinko

Head-to-head: first meeting

Elina Avanesyan has once again put together a steady clay-court season, using her excellent movement and defensive skills to grind down opponents from the baseline. While her grass-court swing was relatively brief, returning to clay suits her game and gives her the chance to settle into long rallies where she is most comfortable.

Petra Marcinko arrives with growing confidence after producing some encouraging tennis over the past few months. The Croatian has been striking the ball cleanly, taking it early, and showing a willingness to dictate points rather than simply react. Her aggressive style has translated well on clay this season, and she has looked increasingly comfortable against higher-ranked opposition.

The contrast in styles should make for an entertaining contest. If Marcinko continues to serve well and keeps control of the baseline exchanges, she has the weapons to prevent Avanesyan from settling into her preferred rhythm and can earn one of her biggest wins of the season at WTA Iasi.

Prediction: Marcinko in 3

Main photo credit: Geoff Burke-Imagn Images

With Wimbledon now in the rear-view mirror, the tour returns to clay for one final stretch in Europe before attention shifts to the North American hard-court swing.
