Announcing the news on social media<\/a>, Auger-Aliassime gave no indication of who might replace Fontang, saying only that he wishes him “nothing but the very best” in his future endeavours. He described his decision in warm terms, saying it had recently been decided that Wimbledon would be his last tournament with the former French player by his side as coach, and thanked him for guiding his development since he was 16 years old, calling him a steady presence through the hardest stretches of his career and a true mentor throughout his journey into adulthood.<\/p>\n

Fontang joined Auger-Aliassime’s team when the Canadian was a teenager working his way through the junior ranks. The two grew together as Felix transitioned into one of the most closely watched prospects on tour. The partnership helped him established himself among the world’s elite, culminating in his first Grand Slam semifinal appearance at the 2021 US Open.<\/p>\n

Under Fontang’s guidance, Auger-Aliassime rose to a career high ranking of world No.4, won nine tour-level titles and reached the quarterfinals at all four Grand Slams, becoming the first Canadian singles player to do so.<\/p>\n

Frederic became known as much for his steadying presence as for his tactical input, helping the 25 year old navigate the inevitable dips that come with a decade at the top of a brutal sport. In his farewell message, Auger-Aliassime made clear the relationship went beyond results on a scoreboard, crediting Fontang with the calm and composure that carried him through his toughest professional moments.<\/p>\n

A Difficult Stretch On Court<\/h3>\n

The split caps a tough run for the world No. 4. His frustration first surfaced after a difficult quarterfinal loss to Flavio Cobolli at the French Open. That disappointment carried into Wimbledon, where he feel to Djokovic 6-7 6-3 3-6 7-6 6-7 in the longest quarterfinal in the tournament’s history.<\/p>\n

Now, the Canadian, still fourth on the ATP Tour rankings, will next be seen competing on home soil at the National Bank Open in his hometown from August 1-13, his first tournament without Fontang in nearly ten years.<\/p>\n
