Fery hit 36 winners to 33 unforced errors.

The Brit had similarly persisted through a fifth-set tiebreaker against Zizou Bergs in this event’s third round. He defeated Bergs 10-5, and Dimitrov 10-7, in the respective tiebreakers. The final score against Dimitrov: 7-5 3-6 4-6 6-4 7-6(7).

Now up against Flavio Cobolli in a Wednesday Centre Court showdown, Fery is again the underdog. But until this Grand Slam, the biggest win of the Brit’s career came against the Italian, earlier at the Australian Open.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="1ffbae35d432d0d71911ca2a0b209fbb" image-id="prsiBhzohEjP" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 5400px; aspect-ratio: 5400/3600;" ></smartframe-embed>

An Australian Open Day 1 Upset

Cobolli faced a stomach bug during the pair’s January match, as he explained in a press conference after falling in a 7-6 (1) 6-4 6-1 blowout. Cobolli was coming off his best season in 2025, and he became the first seed to crash out of the Australian Open. It took the Italian weeks to win a first match in 2026, and now, he’s at the peak of his powers as a Top 10 player.

Fery lost in the Australian Open second round to Tomás Martín Etcheverry, in straight sets. In a press conference after his Monday win, he expected a very different quarterfinal compared to the Australian showdown.

“I’m sure he’s gonna be at 100% of his capacities here, which maybe he wasn’t quite 100% in Australia,” Fery said.

Despite Cobolli’s struggles, the Brit still performed at his best in Melbourne, en route to his first-ever Top 20 win. He made over 70% of his first serves and used the net to his advantage; he’s an all-court player.

Fery’s volleys have been close to perfection at Wimbledon as well, which could be attributed to a standout doubles career at Stanford University. The Brit, in fact, is the fifth former-college tennis player to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals in the last five Wimbledon tournaments. He was even better on the singles court at Stanford; he held a 58-16 record and reached the No. 1 slot in the college tennis rankings.

Ben Shelton, a University of Florida star who helped the team clinch a national title in 2021, was expected to go far at Wimbledon in 2025, and did ultimately reach the quarterfinals. While Shelton was ranked No. 10 in the world, Fery started this tournament at No. 114.

Fery, at the very least, will crack the world’s Top 65 after this tournament, with few points to defend for the remainder of 2026.

“A week ago, I would’ve been happy to win a few matches here, and now winning four matches, being in the quarters, it’s a dream of mine,” Fery said in an on-court interview after defeating Dimitrov.

Main Photo Credit: Susan Mullane-Imagn Images

Five years ago, Arthur Fery was two points away from qualifying for the Wimbledon main draw.
