Predicting these matches are Amanda Bergman, Cizu Harbor, and Tope Oke. Who do you think will advance?

Wimbledon Day 2 Predictions

Jaime Faria vs Sho Shimabukuro

Amanda:
Sho Shimabukuro proved himself this season as a solid grass-court player, and though Jaime Faria had a solid run in qualifying, he’s much better on clay. Neither player has won a main-draw match at Wimbledon, and Shimabukuro has the better chance to improve his record here.
Prediction: Shimabukuro in 3

Cizu:
This is a coin-flip match. Both players have registered a handful of wins this grass season as well, so there’s plenty to draw from going into this. Faria came through qualifying, so is more comfortable on this particular surface. Shimabukuro, though, has played against players with a bit more pedigree and has more than held his own, so an argument can be made that he is more big-game ready. On that basis, I’ll side with the Japanese.
Prediction: Shimabukuro in 5

Tope:
Sho Shimabukuro’s qualifying runs in Stuttgart and a first-round win in Halle have sharpened him for grass, where he pushed Ben Shelton before bowing out. His opponent, Jaime Faria, scraped through qualifying for only his second Wimbledon main draw and has little to show on tour beyond a Rio quarter-final. Expect Shimabukuro to be too experienced, too prepared, and too hot right now for the Portuguese to handle.
Prediction: Shimabukuro in 4

Francisco Cerundolo vs Jaume Munar

Amanda:
Francisco Cerundolo hasn’t yet managed to translate his regular grass-season success to results at Wimbledon, but after his excellent run in Queen’s it shouldn’t be too difficult to dispatch Jaume Munar, who has struggled with both injuries and form this season. Cerundolo can be inconsistent, but Munar likely can’t maintain the necessary level long enough to take advantage of that.
Prediction: Cerundolo in 4

Cizu:
Munar has had a bit of a tough time recently, yet if this were played on clay, I might still give him a fighting chance. The reality, though, is he’s playing a player who just won his biggest title, on a surface you’d least expect. The Argentine, therefore, comes into this in really high spirits and will be keen to see how far he can go based on his recent exploits.
Prediction: Cerundolo in 3

Tope:
Francisco Cerundolo arrives at Wimbledon as Queen’s Club champion and one of the form players in the game, but Jaume Munar winless in four and carrying the rust of a two-month arm injury is a grinder who rarely surrenders without a fight. Their head-to-head sits 3-2 in the Argentine’s favour, yet grass complicates things: fresh Wimbledon courts play differently from the conditions that unlocked Cerundolo’s best tennis at Queen’s, and his Wimbledon record of one win from five offers little comfort. Form says Cerundolo, but Munar’s doggedness makes this a match worth watching.
Prediction: Cerundolo in 5

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOB1FVDUxWW" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 5400px; aspect-ratio: 5400/3858;" ></smartframe-embed>

Arthur Fils vs Raphael Collignon

Amanda:
If Arthur Fils is healthy, which is always in question with him, he’s the favorite on paper against Raphael Collignon. Collignon is no stranger to Grand Slam upsets, though, and has the game to take advantage of an out-of-form and not fully fit Fils. It all depends on whether or not Fils is at 100%, but if he is this is a match he should win.
Prediction: Fils in 4

Cizu:
So many questions surrounding Fils’ match fitness going into this one, as his last completed match was on the first day of May. Collignon has, in that time, enjoyed a good run of form and against a player who should be far from his best, the Belgian will fancy his chances. Fils has previously demonstrated his ability to get back to the swing of things upon returning from injury. But, this time out, I doubt that it’ll be that easy, and I’ll go with a bit of an upset result.
Prediction: Collignon in 4

Tope:
Raphael Collignon has announced himself as a genuine danger on grass. Arthur Fils, meanwhile, has been sidelined since a hip injury ended his Italian Open campaign, costing him Roland Garros and the entire grass swing despite a clay season rich with a Barcelona title and a Madrid semifinal. Rust and resilience collide here, and until Fils proves his body has fully answered, Collignon is the safer pick.
Prediction: Collignon in 5

Frances Tiafoe vs Terence Atmane

Amanda:
Frances Tiafoe is coming off an excellent run to the Halle title and is playing some of the best tennis of his career. He couldn’t have asked for a better first-round matchup, as he’s 2-0 against Terence Atmane, a player who won only one grass match this season. Atmane could take a set, as he has in both of their previous matches, but ultimately Tiafoe should be in control.
Prediction: Tiafoe in 4

Cizu:
With the exception of Tiafoe collapsing, this should be a comfortable match for the American against a player who has won only two of his last ten matches. The American dropped only one set against very respectable opposition in his run to the title at Halle. In comparison, this then should be light work.
Prediction: Tiafoe in 3

Tope:
Frances Tiafoe is on the crest of a wave, brimming with confidence heading into the grass-court Major. His opponent, Terence Atmane, has looked unconvincing on grass this season, managing just one win in four matches and falling short against Gabriel Diallo at Eastbourne. With a 2-0 head-to-head advantage and momentum firmly on his side, Tiafoe should dispatch the Frenchman without much fuss.
Prediction: Tiafoe in 3

Main Photo Credit: Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

We will see half of the first round on Day 2 at Wimbledon, which means a whopping 32 men’s singles matches on the slate.
