The ITIA deemed the incident a doping control whereabouts failure, and an independent tribunal ruled that the evidence provided “no compelling justification” for the World #122 to refuse the test. Four years was the price.

Vondrousova pushed back immediately. In a statement posted to Instagram late Monday, the Czech star was categorical:

“I have never doped. I have never had a positive test.” She went on to detail the circumstances of the December incident, saying the officer had arrived “without properly identifying themselves or following protocol”, a claim she had first raised in April and that the encounter had left her genuinely afraid.

Marketa Vondrousova Denies Doping

Crucially, she noted that she submitted to testing just three days after the incident. The result, she stressed, was negative, consistent with all anti-doping tests throughout her career.

“Throughout my entire career, I have undergone countless anti-doping controls and have always stepped onto the court with a clear conscience,” she wrote.

But clear conscience or not, the ban stands for now. Under its terms, Vondrousova is prohibited from playing in, coaching at, or even attending any event organized or sanctioned by the ITF, WTA, ATP, Grand Slams, or any national association. It is a sweeping exclusion, not just from competition, but from the sport itself.

Her lawyer, Jan Exner, confirmed to AFP that an appeal is being considered, though he declined to elaborate on the grounds or timeline.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBiReqosw6" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4262px; aspect-ratio: 4262/2839;" ></smartframe-embed>

The emotional weight of the past few months was evident in Vondrousova’s statement.

“I would not wish what I have been through over the past few months on anyone,” she wrote. “Waking up every day with uncertainty, fear, and the feeling that you are losing control over your own life is something that is difficult to put into words.”

She described the period as “incredibly exhausting and painful,” one that affected her far more deeply than she could have anticipated.

The ruling has already drawn sharp reactions from within the Czech tennis community. Vladislav Savrda, the manager of Vondrousova’s Prague club, told the Czech news agency CTK the verdict was “nonsensical and scandalous.” He drew a pointed comparison to the ITIA’s handling of cases involving Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek, both of whom tested positive for banned substances but received significantly shorter bans.

“They obviously wanted to avoid a scandal there,” Savrda said. “But now they were gifted this case and needed to point a finger, and unfortunately Marketa is paying for this.”

Whether one accepts the ITIA’s reasoning or not, the optics are difficult to ignore. The governing body imposed its maximum penalty on a player whose only apparent offense was not answering her door, while the sport’s biggest names walked away from positive tests with their seasons and rankings largely intact.

For Vondrousova, the stakes could not be higher. The Wimbledon title. Three additional WTA singles crowns. A French Open final in 2019. An Olympic Silver Medal at Tokyo 2021. A career-high ranking of sixth in the world. All of it now frozen in place, possibly for four years, possibly forever. She has barely played this season, withdrawing from the Adelaide International in January with a shoulder injury, and has appeared in just two matches on tour in 2025.

An appeal appears inevitable. Whether it succeeds may determine whether one of the most unlikely Wimbledon champions of the modern era ever plays on grass again.

Main Photo Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

Czech tennis star Marketa Vondrousova has broken her silence following one of the most shocking rulings in recent tennis history, insisting she has never doped after the International Tennis Integrity Agency handed her a four-year ban on Monday–a punishment that threatens to end her career at just 26 years old.
